Help! Which tartan fabric shall I choose?

Unless you are an experienced seamstress or upholsterer it can be a bit mind boggling choosing the right tartan fabric. The most important question to answer is what do you want to use your tartan material for? I am making:

Tartan Curtains:

Lightweight 10oz Wool tartan fabric or for a heavier curtain and extra warmth Medium Weight 13oz or even 16oz tartan fabric

For washable curtains choose Polyviscose or Polywool tartan material

For a luxurious finish choose Silk tartan fabric

Tartan Cushions and Soft Furnishings:

Lightweight 8 or 10oz Wool tartan fabric

For a luxurious finish choose one of our Silk tartan fabrics

For washable tartan accessories choose Polyviscose or Polywool tartan material

Upholstery

For hard wearing upholstery choose Medium Weight 13oz Wool or 16oz Wool tartan fabric

A cheaper alternative which is still hard wearing and great quality would be the Polyviscose tartan fabric. The polyviscose tartan material is also perfect for upholstering car seats.

Tartan Bedlinen

Cotton is always the nicest fabric to use for bedlinen. For a wider choice of tartans have a look at our polycotton.

Tartan Tablecloths & Napkins

Cotton or polycotton is perfect for tableware and nice and easy to work with and wash. For a wider choice of tartans our 8oz Wool tartan fabric also works well and can be machine washed on a wool cycle or hand washed.

Tartan Clothing and Accessories

The 10oz Wool tartan fabric is a really versatile fabric and top quality so it can be worn next to the skin without irritation. Perfect for making skirts, trousers and accessories.

The 13oz Wool tartan fabric is heavier weight and therefore suited to mens trousers, jackets and kilts. For real heavyweight garments the 16oz is indestructible and very warm!

For machine washable tartan clothing and accessories choose either the polyviscose or polywool tartan fabric.

Wedding Dresses

Of course silk is always the preferred option for a tartan wedding dress, however you are limited to 60 tartans, so the 8oz lightweight wool is another option for a wider choice of tartan. Remember you can always order a swatch of tartan if you want to check the colours or show your dress maker the fabric before you order.
