Weight-Watchers: The Kilt Edition

Welcome to today's blog post, not as the title may suggest a January fad or new year's resolution, but an exploration of kilts and fabrics. With several outdoor festivals celebrating Scottish culture across the United States and Canada (It's still too cold and wet to go outside here in Scotland...), we thought it would be a good idea to explore the different types of kilts that can be worn at these events. From 'Kilt Skate' to the 'Highland Games' read on to find out all about which kilt will be best for you.

For those of you accustomed to a warmer climate, this is the kilt for you. A 'casual' kilt or 4 yard kilt is a lighter weight option as it uses less material than a 'traditional' kilt, resulting in greater breathability. This type of kilt sits lower on the waist when compared with a traditional heavyweight kilt, and is a great alternative for faster paced activities and warmer climates. If you are planning to visit or participate in any of the Highland Games in Florida or Arizona in the next few weeks and want to show off your Scottish roots but stay cool this could well be the kilt for you.

Upcoming Scottish Highland Games Festivals:

Why not wear a casual kilt to keep cool at one of these upcoming events? ScotlandShop are doing a tour of Florida at the end of February and will even pop up at a few of these so you can see the different kilt weights for yourself.

Northeast Florida Scottish Highland Games and Festival: February 29th 2020 - ScotlandShop will be there. Look out for our booth!

For colder climates, a traditional kilt may be more suitable and is definitely much warmer, how else could Scots survive running round the Highlands with bare knees? A traditional kilt or 8 yard kilt is made using the considerably heavier weight 16oz wool cloth over the 10oz used for the casual kilt, and it uses twice the amount of material. This kilt sits high on the waist and paired with all the traditional Highlandwear accessories is ideal for more formal occasions. Or alternatively for those crazy enough to brave the cold and participate in the Kilt Skate in New York City or Toronto in February, a traditional kilt will keep you warm and has a fabulous swing for executing the axel or triple salchow. Just watch out on the lifts, we don't want any spectators to get a nasty fright!

Upcoming Kilt Skate Events:

Who would have known there were so many opportunities to don your kilt and spend the day skating?

Toronto: February 8th 2020 (The future stars of the NHL will be on show at this event, with the Toronto Marlies facing off against the Rochester Americans)

Many thanks for taking the time to read today's blog post. If any of these events are happening near you be sure to pay them a visit for a great day out, and share your photos with us. Meantime we will get practising our skating so we can join in next year!
