Despite opposition from local residents, environmentalists and wind farm manufacturer US business tycoon Donald Trump finally opened his Scottish golf course in Aberdeenshire yesterday. The red tape was cut by Mr Trump wearing a red zip top and branded golf cap. We of course think he should have been wearing some of our MacLeod of Lewis Plus Fours as this is his family tartan. Trump International Golf Links has the support of former Ryder Cup champion Colin Montgomerie who teed off with Mr Trump. He was later quoted as saying that the course was "one of the best, if not the best Links course" he had ever played. More than £100 million has been spent on the course and the clubhouse and Donald Trump commented in the press that he is proud to have created "perhaps the greatest golf course in the world". It is almost 7 years since the ground was originally purchased for the golf course and opposition has been fierce, with particular concern that the links course is built on protected sand dunes. Mr Trump has had his own concerns over an offshore windfarm proposed for the area and says he will not proceed with his plans for a hotel and houses until a final decision is made. The official opening to the public is on 15th July. Just time to practise a few tee shots and order your tartan golf trousers, in the yellow, black and red MacLeod of Lewis, or any other tartan!
