Thousands of young people submitted their designs and last week 15 year old Aamir Mehmood, from Shawlands Academy in Glasgow found out that his design had been selected for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2014.

The tartan was modelled by one of Scotland's strongest men, Gregor Edmunds, all 6ft 5in and 22-stone of him and this keen kilt-wearing man has taken a real shine to the strong colours combined in Aamir's design. Talking of his inspiration for the tartan design Aamir said he incorporated blue, yellow, white and red to represent Scotland’s national colours, combined with a green landscape to demonstrate the fact that 75% of Shawlands Academy is bilingual and around 50 different languages are spoken in his school.

Over 300 schools participated in the competition and the tartan will be used in the opening and closing ceremonies for the Commonwealth Games.
