Tartan Invaded Trends: Violet your Outfit
Our Tartan Invaded Trends blog post series aims to bring Tartan to the forefront of fashion, illustrating how subtly including hints of tartan in your outfit can be as on trend as the latest fashion trends themselves! In this blog post we check out the IN colour this summer, violet.
Violet is the most fashionable pastel this summer. So often used for it’s representation of passion and luxury, it’s a versatile colour that oozes femininity.
Historically, purple stood as a sign of royalty and wealth. Today it’s a frequent seasonal fashion trend and a popular shade favoured by some of the most recognised fashion designers such as Gucci, Etro and Fendi.
Lilac, lavender and bruised mauve tones temper their sweetness with a hint of icy elegance, marking them out as the coolest of all summer pastels. Vogue

Disco fashion
In the 1980s, there seemed to be a shift of meaning behind the violet glow, changing from wealth and royalty to power and vibrancy. Violet was embraced by both men and women during this period and the colour appeared in the form of oversized blazers, workout wear, costume jewelry and plastic sunglasses frames.
Violet was also popularly dyed into lace and leather during this time - the perfect shade for a night at the local disco as it would make you stand out on the dance floor!
Men’s fashion
Violet has often been a popular shade in men’s fashion, especially since the 1980s. In the early 21st century, violet neckties were popularly worn by politicians and professional businessmen. The thought was that the purple colour was a good balance between red and blue; red that represents confidence and assertiveness and blue that represents peace and tranquility.
World leaders such as George Bush and president Obama have often been photographed wearing violet ties.
