MacKinnon Tartan & Clan
Clan mythology claims that the MacKinnon's are descended from a Norwegian pricncess who built her castle at Dunakin on the Isle of Skye. This princess, who was called Saucy Mary, collected tolls from ships that passed between the island and the mainland. When she died she was laid to rest beneath a cairn in the Red Hills. The Clan also has close links to St Columba, the Irish monk credited with introducing Christianity to Scotland. Historically, the abbots of Columba's monastery on Iona were members of Clan MacKinnon. so perhaps I should have phrased the heading to this page differently, descendants of a princess and a saint.
