With schools and nurseries shut across the country, we thought it would be fun to create the School of ScotlandShop. Maths and Science may not be our strong points, but we love history and all things Scottish. Join us over the upcoming weeks as we design new tartans, hunt for Nessie, find out about Scotland's past, and so much more! We're glad that you can join us!
Highland games have been played in Scotland for hundreds of years and are a key part of Scottish culture. They are every bit as popular today as they have ever been, and can now be found across the world, not just here in Scotland. It is a great way to bring the community together and celebrate Scottish heritage and culture.
Highland games are normally one-day or weekend long events, taking place in a large open space in the countryside. The event is structured around the traditional Highland sports such as the caber toss, tug o' war and the hammer through. It's also a great opportunity to see some Highland dancing and music and experience Scottish food, craft and games. Some highland games even have events which also include livestock events, parades, pet competitions and ceilidhs.
The tradition of Highland games was carried across the world when Scots travelled to far-flung lands. Highland games have taken place in the United States since 1836, but can also be found in countries such as Canada, Norway, New Zealand and even Brazil!
Unfortunately due to the ongoing pandemic, many Highland games across the world have been cancelled. So, we thought that we would bring the games to you at home. Our friends at VisitScotland have created this amazing guide on how to create your very own Highland games, to celebrate Scottish culture from the comfort of your home. From creating hats and flags to tug o' war and haggis hurl, there's plenty to get excited about with your very own Highland games from home.
