'O My Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O My Luve's like the melody
That's sweetly played in tune'
- A Red, Red Rose by Robert Burns
It wouldn't be a Scottish Valentine's Day without mentioning the old crooner Rabbie Burns! Notorious for his songs and poems about love and the lassies who captured his heart, we can imagine the bard had quite a few Valentines in his day. His poem 'A Red, Red Rose' is said to be based on a folk song he heard on one of his travels.
'And I see when you're loving me, I'm loving you'
- Loving You by Paolo Nutini
The modern day equivalent, fellow Scottish singer Paolo Nutini heralding from Glasgow, also has quite a few love songs in his repertoire. For example, his tune 'Loving You' and 'Last Request' were dedicated to the loves in his life.
We couldn't forget about Outlander's very own Jamie Fraser - played by heart throb Sam Heughan. Sam hails from the wee village of Balmaclellan in Dumfries and Galloway, moving to Edinburgh when he was 12. Should you wish to follow the story and join the Jacobite uprising, dress like part of the clan, kitting yourself out in the Fraser Hunting Weathered tartan.
Whilst courting Taylor Swift, there were rumours that the Scottish DJ Calvin Harris had grand intentions of marrying her at Wedderburn Castle here in the Scottish Borders. As you can imagine, this caused much excitement in the town. Sadly this romance ended and Duns returned to tranquility.
BAFTA winning Scot, Ewan Gordon McGregor, is not only an internationally renowned actor but also famous for his directing skills. This laddie from Crieff in Perthshire has played a variety of roles, with the less than romantic Trainspotting shooting him to fame in 1996, soon followed by the very different lead role in the beautiful love story Little Voice. The father of 4 has ventured into science fiction, animation and theatre, as well as completing a marathon on his beloved motorbike and working with UNICEF aroudn the world. Definitely our favourite romantic Scot!
