Today is National Fish & Chips day so we thought it only fitting to shine a light to some of the best chippies in Scotland, from businesses right on our doorstep to the opposite end of the country. There is nothing that gives us that authentic 'straight off the boat' feeling more than sitting on the beach enjoying the sea view with a poke of tasty fish and chips doused in salt and vinegar!
Joe's Catch - Eyemouth
The ScotlandShop HQ is based in the scenic Scottish Borders in the south of Scotland, and this month we are focusing on Border Traditions, which of course includes the fishing industry. The small town of Eyemouth is renowned for delicious seafood, with a harbour filled with fishing boats and catch exported all over the world, which guarantees a great choice of of amazing Fish and Chips. A popular newcomer to tempt us is Joe's Catch. Joe's Catch is a family run seafood takeaway business operating out of a trailer down by the harbour, of course they use locally sourced seafood, the perfect weekend treat. The business is run by Kirsten (the cousin of Kaye, who keeps our dispatch department running smoothly) and we caught up with her to find out more…
Joe's Catch Eyemouth Trailer
I started the ball rolling with the business in July 2020 after visiting a seafood shack in the holidays and thought - we need this in Eyemouth, why is there not something like this in Eyemouth? I am from a fishing family and both my brothers are skippers - one locally from Eyemouth & one from Fraserburgh and my grandpa was a fisherman from Eyemouth. So, I decided to bite the bullet and start up, I called it Joe's Catch after him!

I get all my produce locally, including bread from the local bakers etc. I make sure everything is the freshest it can be, which makes the preparation time massive but so worth it. I have a weekly changing menu to keep things a bit more exciting! In the past it’s included Pina Colada Prawns, Cullen Skink, Creel Fries, Lobster Loaded Fries, Haddock Bon Bon’s. I also do salads, quiche, nachos, flatbreads, baguettes, pate, fish boxes for one (a seafood selection with salad & bread) and sharer platters & small pots of cockles, mussels, prawns. I make sure I keep it different to what the chip shops do in Eyemouth, they do fab menus of their own and I would never cross the line there. I do take inspo from a lot of other Scottish seafood trailers and have been in touch with a few, they are all amazing and literally what I strive for - social media is amazing for inspiration!!

However, the main thing for me is to make sure it’s all local and homemade, that’s something I will continue no matter how many hours it takes me. I still work full time in housing so this is extra! My mum is a massive help, literally my right hand woman and she is also a carer so we are putting in the hours to make it a success!
If are planning on staycationing in the Scottish Borders this summer, or you are spending the day exploring Eyemouth, make sure you try out this tasty hidden gem! Writing this is making me hungry so I know where I am going this evening.
Lobster Shack - North Berwick
Lobster Shack - North Berwick
Of course, we had to shine a light on some of the other Fish and Chips outlets in Scotland, and one of the more unique establishments is the Lobster Shack in North Berwick. They describe themselves as “the finest sea-food cooked to perfection in the picturesque setting of North Berwick harbour”, and perfection it is from the looks of their social media! They offer a wide variety on their menu, including crab, sea bass and mackerel, however lobster really is their specialty. The shack also strives to be as sustainable as possible, using ethically caught seafood and biodegradable containers and cutlery.
The Bay - Stonehaven
The Bay Fish and Chips Team
If you are clued up on your Scottish Fish and Chip shops then you will most likely already know of The Bay. This Stonehaven based chippy is well known not just all over Scotland, but all over the UK as in 2013 they won the award for the UK's Best Independent Takeaway at the National Fish & Chip Awards! And the awards don't stop there, as they have racked up a whole host of prestigious food awards, the most recent was when they were ranked as one of the World's Top Food Experiences by the Lonely Planet Guide! People rave about fresh and huge portions, and for such a great price. If you are in the North East of Scotland make sure you stop in for a fish supper.

Another one of Scotland's best kept fish secrets is Alandas, a Scottish seafood business based in the scenic town of Longniddry in East Lothian. They offer a more unique selection of fish that you wouldn't find in your typical chip shop, from fresh grilled prawns to beautifully cooked salmon and even delicious oysters! Of course, they also serve the traditional fish supper, but this is the place to go when you are craving a slightly more special experience. Since the business is situated in a unit with wheels, it means they can be spotted at various events and festivals in Edinburgh and the local area.
We hope you enjoyed our run down of our favourite chippies in Scotland. This is of course only a small handful of some of the amazing Fish & Chip Shops in Scotland. But the real question is, where is your favourite location for Scottish Fish & Chips?
