The Famous Faces of Clan MacLachlan

James MacLachlan - 'One Armed Mac'

James MacLachlan was a distinguished Royal Air Force fighter pilot during the Second World War. Born in Cheshire, on the 1st of April 1919, he joined the RAF in 1937 at the tender age of 17. MacLachlan first saw active service in 1940, following the outbreak of the war, in the Battle of France. In this battle, he flew a light-bomber and was credited with damaging two enemy aircraft, which resulted in MacLachlan being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. MacLachlan then trained as a fighter pilot and featured in the Battle of Britain, protecting the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.

Following the battle, MacLachlan transferred to Malta, where he was severely wounded in action in 1941. This resulted in his arm being amputated, earning him the nickname 'One-Armed Mac'. Heroically, MacLachlan returned to active operations in November 1941 with the ad of an artificial limb! MacLachlan returned to Britain, joining the No. 1 Squadron of the RAF as Squadron Leader. In this role, he led night operations in defence of Britain, and by 1942 his record stood at 13 enemy aircraft shot down. Following this, MacLachlan went on a lecture circuit of the United States, before returning to active service in 1943. Upon his return, MacLachlan participated in cross-channel patrols in which he brought his tally of planes shot down to 16.

'One-Armed Mac' took his final flight in July 1943, when he was sadly shot down and crashed over France. MacLachlan was one of the most distinguished fighter pilots of the Second World War and died a hero who protected Britain's skies until the very end.

Kyle MacLachlan

Kyle MacLachlan is an American actor best known for his role as Dale Cooper in the cult classic Twin Peaks. He was born on the 22nd of February 1959 in Yakima, Washington and is of Scottish descent. MacLachlan held prominent roles in several TV series, notably, Desperate Housewives, How I Met Your Mother and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.; and films including The Doors, The Flintstones and Inside Out. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in 1990 for his role in Twin Peaks.

Sarah McLachlan, OC, OBC

Sarah McLachlan is a Canadian singer-songwriter known for her emotional ballads. She was born on the 28th of January 1968, and as of 2015 had sold over 40 million albums worldwide! McLachlan's best selling album is Surfacing, for which she won two Grammy Awards. In addition to her musical talents, McLachlan is known for founding the Lilith Fair tour which helps to promote a wide variety of female artists on a large scale. Over its three year history, the Lilith Tour brought together over 2 million people and raised $7 million for charities. It is also the most successful all-female music festival in history and was one of the biggest festivals of the 1990s.

George McLachlan

George McLachlan was an FA Cup-winning Scottish footballer and manager. McLachlan was born in Glasgow in 1902 and played as an outside left (left winger). He started his career with Clyde before moving to Cardiff City in 1925. It was there that McLachlan was part of the club's historic victory in the 1927 FA Cup Final; which remains the first and only time a non-English Club has won the competition. McLachlan made 140 appearances and scored 22 goals for Cardiff City before moving to Manchester United in 1929. He had a successful spell at the club with over 100 appearances and even captained the club for a short time.

Following his playing career, McLachlan had stints managing Le Havre in France, and Queen of the South. During his time as manager of Queen of the South McLachlan's team won an international overseas tour in 1936, playing against the likes of Racing Club Santander and Stade Reims. The following year he oversaw his team's first-ever victory over Glasgow Rangers.

In 1947, McLachlan emigrated to the United States settling in Derby, Connecticut. McLachlan and his family purchased a summerhouse in nearby Branford soon after. There McLachlan taught French at the local school, although holding no formal qualification in the language which he had learned in his time with Le Havre. It was here, at his summer house, that McLachlan saw out the rest of his days following an illustrious career.
