Throughout January we have been celebrating all things Clan Maxwell. We have met some famous faces, visited many sites, and gained great insight into the history of this ancient clan. Finally, we called upon the valued Clan members to share their stories and we had a wonderful response; read the blog to find out more!

Jill and Tom Maxwell

We received a lovely email from Jill, sharing some information about her husband's family:

"My husband's family settled in Ontario from a land grant from Lord Grey, the first Governor General of Canada. They were Protestant and I believe, lived in Ireland. Joseph ran the hotel and collected taxes, and named the Ontario village, Maxwell. He had a big family. My husband's grandfather, Thomas was the 7th. Child. He didn’t read or write due to a lack of teachers for first generation Canadians.

We meet yearly in Ontario and update the family tree. We lack information sadly, about the years before Joseph and Sarah arrived in Canada.

Here is a photo of our son Bruce, wearing the Maxwell tartan. He bought it from your shop and wears it proudly.  Yes tell others about Joseph and Sarah Maxwell. Someone might tell us about their life before Canada.

Thank you, Jill, for your family story and photos! We hope you can find out more about Joseph from someone in the Maxwell Clan.

Tom Adair

Tom from Douglas Lodge got in touch to share some of the Scottish themes he and his masonic lodge have celebrated in 2025, including donning Maxwell tartans!

"We’ve had a lot of fun this year leaning into Scottish themes. It all started when I visited St. John’s Castle in Stranraer followed by several Masonic lodges throughout the country. You will notice both the Maxwell (Adair) and Douglas tartans in various images as we leaned into both this past year.

We conduct a fidelity circle using a quaich and have a special “Quaich & Horn” ceremony for our officer installation. We’ve had pipers, haggis, good Scottish whiskey, and encouraged brothers to purchase and wear kilts. It’s a slow proposition over here but one by one I’m making progress!!"

So wonderful to hear how you've all been embracing Scotland! Long may it continue.

Ian and Elaine Maxwell

Ian and Elaine in the UK sent in their really fun photos! It looks very yummy. They say,

"This year we decorated our Christmas cake to look like Maxwell Modern tartan.

The spacing isn’t particularly accurate and line thickness shows some artistic licence somewhat.  It looks better in the flesh, but here’s a couple of photos.."

We think it looks great, and hopefully it tasted amazing. Thank you for sending the photos in!

Michael Maxwell

Michael sent in his wonderful photo proudly dressed in his Maxwell tartan. Michael says,

"The Moab Utah festival is held in October. It is in the beautiful red rocks. Along with 3 national parks in the area."

Thanks, Michael, we hope you enjoyed the festival!

Unfortunately January has come to an end, that certainly doesn't mean our love for Clan Maxwell is over, so be sure to get in touch with us if you fancy chatting all things Maxwell!
