How to use a table runner

Tartan Table
  • Place the table runner so that it hangs over the end of the table, usually with anywhere from 4–12 inches equal overhang on both sides.
  • Alternatively you can use a short runner that is significantly shorter than the table and becomes a large tablemat.
  • Runners are most commonly placed lengthwise across a table, organizing dishes and glasses in a clear area while protecting the table from the heat of serving dishes and spills.
  • When laid lengthwise, the runner should take up a third of the table width.
  • Runners can also be placed widthwise across the table in line with each chair, effectively acting as a placemat and creating a clear area for each diner.
  • Using both lengthwise and widthwise runners is overkill so should generally be avoided.
  • Your runner should stand out from the table and as such should not be the same color as the tablecloth.

How to use Napkins

Tartan Napkins
  • Your napkins should normally match your other tablelinen e.g. table runners and place mats. Or pick the base color or a stripe in the tartan and mix and match your plains and plaids.
  • Fabric napkins can be washed and reused so should be considered a more economical and environmentally friendly option in the long term. Bring out your Scottish heritage for every occasion!
  • Most napkins are between 12 x 12 inches (normally for afternoon tea) and 24 x 24 inches (for very formal occasions), with 18 x 18 inches being the most multipurpose option.
