How to Use a Table Runner

  • Place the table runner so that it hangs over the end of the table, usually with anywhere from 10–30cm equal overhang on both sides. 
  • Alternatively, you can use a short runner that is significantly shorter than the table and becomes a large tablemat. 
  • Runners are most commonly placed lengthwise across a table, organising dishes and glasses in a clear area while protecting the table from the heat of serving dishes and spillages. 
  • When laid lengthwise, the runner should take up a third of the table width.
  • Runners can also be placed width wise across the table in line with each chair, effectively acting as a placemat and creating a clear area for each diner.  
  • Using both lengthwise and width wise runners is overkill so should generally be avoided 
  • Your runner should stand out from the table and as such should not be the same colour as the tablecloth.

How to Use Napkins

  • Your napkins should normally match your other tablelinen e.g. table runners and place mats. 
  • Fabric napkins can be washed and reused so should be considered a more economical option in the long term.
  • Most napkins are between 30 x 30cm (normally for afternoon tea) and 60 x 60cm (for very formal occasions), with 45 x 45cm being the most multipurpose option.
