Tartan trews are the more traditional style of trouser sitting higher on the waist and featuring a broader waistband and a fishtail back, whereas tartan trousers are cut in a standard suit trouser style and you can choose slim or classic fit. Either trews or trousers can be made to your specifications and worn for any occasion, however if you want to wear a Prince Charlie Jacket (which is cut a bit higher) then either choose trews or ask for your trousers to have a higher rise. Extra details such as a military hem can also be added.
It is a matter of personal taste but yes a kilt belt can be worn with tartan trews. However if you are wearing a waistcoat you would not wear a kilt belt. If you have ordered tartan trousers these come with belt loops (unless you request not) and you can wear a standard belt with these. If you want to wear a kilt belt with your trousers then please let us know and we will make the belt loops deeper to accommodate this.
Tartan trousers or trews make a very smart outfit for a wedding. Wear with a kilt jacket, or a tartan or plain jacket to complete the outfit. Accessories such as a matching tartan tie or bow tie, pocket square or even a pair of tartan brogues will bring your outfit together. We are here to help if you need any styling assistance!
There is no exact answer on which one is right and which one is wrong; it is all about personal preferences. Traditionally belt loops are considered a more casual option where as side adjusters offer a more formal touch to the trousers. One thing to consider with belt loops is the need for belts to coordinate, and then shoes to coordinate with the belt, where as side adjusters eliminate this issue.
Given its bold pattern, it can be challenging to style tartan trousers. And while choosing the right cut and pairing is crucial, ultimately, tartan trews are a versatile and classic piece in any man’s wardrobe. Factors such as the sett (pattern) size of the tartan make a big difference to the look, go for a larger, cleaner check for a more subtle effect such as Black Watch Modern or choose a busy, smaller pattern for a statement pair of trews. Additional features such as flat fronts or pleats on the waistband modernise the look further and you can also opt for turn ups to suit your shape or style. Find out more about the history of turn-ups and why they might be right for you on the blog.
When it comes to styling tartan trousers, there are two main ways to do it: either choose a matching top, such as the same tartan waistcoat or tartan jacket, or let the tartan trousers be the focal point of the outfit, pairing them with a block-coloured top. If you want to make a real statement you can mix and match your patterns, throw a bit of tweed in with the tartan, or combine Ancient and Modern versions of the same tartan, this means the pattern repeat (size) will be the same and the colours will tone, but you create a more striking and unique look. Our favourite rugby legend Doddie Weir combined MacFarlane Modern with MacFarlane Hunting in one of him renowned bold suits, and famously designer Vivienne Westwood sent the Gordon Dress Modern tartan down the catwalk combined with the Gordon Clan Modern to great effect.
Any tailor can tell you that, in general, tartan is not a slimming pattern. But depending on the scale, contrast and colours, some check patterns are more flattering than others - just like the trousers’ cut itself. While it is widely accepted that slim cuts tend to look great on men with leaner body types, and that the traditional classic cut is a good fit for larger men, we think the key is the fit. As long as they are well-tailored, any tartan trousers can be the right fit for you.
Tartan trousers are quite the fashion statement, and it can be intimidating to incorporate them in an outfit. However, tartan trews can be worn with a lot of other pieces, including:
Matching Waistcoat and/or Jacket: pair your tartan trousers with the matching tartan waistcoat and/or tartan jacket for a bold and formal look.
Kilt Jackets: most tartan trews will sit at the same height as a kilt, so pairing it with a shorter kilt jacket, such as the Prince Charlie, creates a timeless, classy look, perfect for evening wear or in place of a kilt.
Sweaters: for a casual look, pair your tartan trousers with a lambswool sweater. When choosing your sweater, make sure the top’s solid colour is included in the tartan, and for a more muted look, go for the darkest colour in the pattern. This modern approach easily increases the versatility of your trousers.

When we first introduced our Tartan Trousers to the website, we didn't initially offer a Turn Up, however due to an influx of requests from our customers it is now it's own dedicated product on the website, you can even choose how deep you would like the turn up to be! Turn Ups can help to create shape in your leg and also allows the trousers to drape more naturally due to the extra cloth at the bottom of the leg.
