We are often asked about Aran sweaters and whether they are Irish or Scottish. The Aran Sweater is Irish and named after the Aran islands off Ireland's West coast where the first sweaters were said to have been created many generations ago, worn by fishermen and farmers. To explain what a Shetland sweater is - knitted from Shetland wool which comes from sheep in the Shetland Isles, a pretty remote area of Scotland where there are definitely more sheep than people! This tough breed of sheep has a fine, hard-wearing wool which makes for great knitwear, although it is not the softest.
