What is Tweed?

Tweed first originated in Scotland and Ireland as a working man's cloth, it was rough, thick, felted and featured muted and earthy tones inspired by the surrounding landscapes. The cloth was used by farmers to battle the harsh conditions they were working in and soon became the cloth of choice for many outdoor pursuits. You can learn more about the history of tweed on our blog.

What is the difference between Harris Tweed and Scottish Tweed?

Harris Tweed is a Scottish tweed woven in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland by the islanders of Lewis, Harris, Uist and Barra. Since 1911 and the formation of The Harris Tweed Association, a certification has been applied to any tweed woven to ensure it reaches the quality standard, and any authentic Harris Tweed cloth or product will carry the Orb and Maltese Cross with the words "Harris Tweed" underneath as a trademark and guarantee. There are however many other quality tweeds woven in different regions of Scotland, and as ScotlandShop is based in the Scottish Borders, home to many fabulous textiles mills, we source our Scottish tweed more locally. To answer the question; Harris Tweed is different because of where it is woven, rather than due to any difference in weaving technique or quality.

What is the difference between Donegal Tweed and Scottish tweed?

Donegal tweed is woven in Ireland and has a unique weaving process, creating it's iconic speckled pattern. This process involved adding coloured yarns to the warp and weft threads. Learn more about warp and weft on our blog all about weaving.

Is Tweed made of wool?

Yes! Tweed is traditionally a pure wool fabric and all of the tweeds you find on the ScotlandShop website are made of 100% wool and woven in Scotland. Non-traditional tweed can be woven with other yarn mixes for a different finish or function. Even better, pure wool Scottish tweed is naturally fire retardant to domestic standards making it ideal for soft furnishings and upholstery, as well as clothing, and it is also shower proof.

Can you make plus size tweed trousers?

We carry some stock sizes in our tweed trouser range, however most of our trousers are made to order so we can make them to any size or specification. Plus sizes may carry a surcharge. Youth and child sizes can also be catered for. You can find women's tweed trousers on our website here.

How do I measure for my tweed trousers?

We have a measuring guide to help you take your own measurements. You can also visit one of our locations in Edinburgh, Crieff and Duns in Scotland or Albany, NY in the USA and a member of our team can take your measurements for you. We pop up at events around the world and we always have our tape measures and tweed swatch books with us. Find out where we are next on our Events page. You can also book a Virtual Appointment and we can help you take your measurements on a video call.
