Throughout the month of October we have been celebrating all things Clan Ross. We have met some famous faces, visited many a castle, and gained great insight into the history of this ancient clan. Finally, we called upon the valued Clan members to share their stories; the response was fantastic and we are so excited to share them.

Samantha got in touch to share her family connections to Clan Ross.

"Jacob Ross (1813-1870), son of John Ross (1781-1849, came by ship from Scotland with his children after the death of his wife) and Christena Conrad, married Elizabeth Thompson. Together they had many children, including my 3rd great grandfather, Josiah Ross. Jacob Ross owned a lumber mill in Rossville, Illinois; the town was named after him and his family. His son Josiah married Sarah Ann Prather and they crossed the great plains together in covered wagons from Illinois in the 1860s and purchased land in Southern California. They were the first white settlers in Southern California and sold some of their land to William H. Spurgeon, the "founder" of Santa Ana, CA. Because the Ross Family was so prominent and the first pioneers in the area that would later become Santa Ana, much of the city and its museums have large amounts of Ross Family history within them. The pictures I have attached are of my 4th and 3rd great grandparents and excerpts from the local cemetery guide. Their stories can be found in many 19th century books based on the founders of Southern California. I am proud to be a descendent of the Ross Clan!"

Ross Family in Finland

We were delighted when Tove sent us a picture of her family along with a little history of her Clan Ross heritage.

"William Ross and his wife Maria Long moved from Scotland to Finland in the 17th century. Finland was a part of the Swedish monarchy in those days.

Their son Herman Williamsson Ross (1636-1687) was the mayor of the town of Vaasa and one of the richest in Finland due to his business and prosperous marriage to Margareta Jesenhausen. Their granddaughter Margareta Ross (d.1754) got married in 1731 to reverend Johan Hornborg and their grandson David Wegelius (1754-1813) bought Pelkola manor in Hattula about 100 km north of Helsinki in 1792. The manor is still owned by our family. I and my daughters Emma and Disa Wegelius are born there.

In the picture you can see my immediate family, my husband Aki Jauro, our daughters Emma and Disa Wegelius, our sons in Rulamo and Daniel Wegelius. We all wear scarves made of the Ross Hunting Modern tartan Daniel has also a golf cap and Freja the dachshund has her own coat made of it.

The Clan Ross has also a more modern connection to Finland. The Balnagown Castle is now owned by the al-Fayed family. The late Mohamed al-Fayed was married to the Finnish born Heidi Wathen."
