The most famous of the Campbell tartans is probably the
For men a modern take on this look is to layer yourtartan suit with a navy sweater, white shirt and even a complimentary green overcoat similar to the Oliver Spencer Fall 2017 look. This easily breaks up the dark block of tartan and can also make your look feel more casual.
Alexander McQueen even demonstrates in the McQ AW 2012 collection a new way of wearing the traditional Campbell kilt. Overlooking the traditional Prince Charlie jacket and brogues, this look opts for military boots and a longer belted coat instead, proving the kilt can, and should, be an everyday item and not just reserved for special occasions! In fact, in Scotland it is common to wear a kilt with a team shirt and trainers to a rugby match. Here at ScotlandShop, we can even match your trainers to your kilt, so you can effortlessly achieve the head to toe Campbell look!
While in Scotland it may be summer, it doesn’t feel like it with the rain and wind we’ve been having, but if you’re lucky and live in warmer climates, you may want to pack away your coats and update your Campbell look for the sun. Scottish fashion blogger and journalist Forever Amber pairs her Campbell Modern pencil skirt with matching shades of green. She recommends “abandoning the winter coats and opaque tights I’ve been living in lately with a more spring-like leather jacket and nude fishnets”.
Swapping your longline jackets with a shorter version such as our bolero jacket like Forever Amber looks great and won’t make you melt in the sun! For summer however, I prefer a mini skirt to the longer pencil skirt. In your favourite Campbell tartan, a mini skirt will elongate your legs (a bonus if you’ve got short legs and a long body like me!), and our bias cut fabric will change up your tartan look with diagonal checks rather than the standard straight lines.
Another option for summer is to choose an ancient Campbell or a variation to freshen up your look. The Campbell of Cawdor tartan includes a striking red stripe throughout that can be paired with red accessories to balance your look. From Victoria Beckham’s burgundy skirt to Miranda Kerr’s scarlet shoes, a splash of red combined with the navy of the Campbell tartan makes a bold statement.
I love a splash (or two) of colour in my outfits, so my preferred tartan outfits all include a stripe of colour I can accessorise and match in my accessories. I’m a big fan of clashing and combining my tartans too, and with the Campbell being so subtle, it’s an easy one to match with a complimentary tartan such as the Stewart Royal with it’s bold red and greens. I'd reccommend adding a lightweight Stewart Royal scarf or heels to your Campbell look to really grab attention when out shopping.
We of course can’t discuss the Campbell tartans without mentioning Kate Middleton’s royal touch. The now iconic ‘Kate coat’ is the duchess’s go-to for an elegant outfit with a dramatic silhouette. The coat speaks for itself as a statement piece that will never go out of style, which Kate pairs with simple black heels and a green scarf to pull on the colours within the tartan.
I love Kate Middleton’s Campbell modern choice, but my favourite is our Campbell Dress Modern version. I think the white of the dress tartan enhances the beautiful greens, and can be easily worn with a white summer dress underneath. It’s just the cherry on top that we have this in the sale at the moment!
