This year in the UK, Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday falls on Sunday the 19th of March and is a celebration of all things motherhood!
Did you know Mother's Day began as a Christian celebration in the 1600's when devoted Christians would visit their 'mother church' for a special service? It is usually observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday and reportedly more phone calls are made on Mother's Day than any other day of the year!
Mother's Day is recognised around the world and wherever it is celebrated, it is generally about showering your devoted mum with cards, chocolates, and flowers.
Here in Scotland, Mother's Day is all about showing your mum just how much you love and appreciate them, whether it be by making her breakfast, buying her a bunch of flowers, making a handmade card or doing the housework! Here are a few Scottish Mammies you might recognise:
Kelly Macdonald
Born in Glasgow, actress Kelly, made her debut in the iconic film, Trainspotting, set in the beautiful capital city Edinburgh. As well as this she has also starred in several recognizable films and television shows including Brave, Harry Potter, Nanny MacPhee and Line of Duty. Kelly was married to Dougie Payne of Scottish band, Travis, until 2017 and is a mother of two boys, Theodore and Freddie. After a stint in New York and London, Kelly returned to her roots in Glasgow where she now lives with her children.
Judy Murray
Judy Murray is a Scottish tennis coach from Bridge of Allan in Stirlingshire. She is mother to professional tennis players Jamie and Olympic champion Andy Murray. Some of our team were lucky enough to meet Judy at the Edinburgh Kilt Walk in 2018!
Edith Bowman
Hailing from the beautiful Fife coastal town of Anstruther (famous for its incredible fish & chips) Edith is a Scottish Radio DJ and television presenter. Known for her time as prime daytime presenter on BBC Radio 1, as well as slots on Top of the Pops and quite significantly in Scotland for hosting the BBC coverage of T in the Park - Scotland's best festival back in the day! It would appear the boys are fairly outnumbering the girls for these Scottish mammies, as she also has two boys, Rudy and Spike, with her Husband, Tom Smith, lead singer of indie band, Editiors.
Queen Elinor
Queen Elinor is a fictional Mammie from the movie Brave voiced by Emma Thompson. She has her hands full with her headstrong daughter Merida and triplet boys Harris, Hubert and Hamish while helping her husband run the Kingdom of Dun Broch.
Anna White
Our big boss lady Anna deserves a special mention as she keeps all of us in line, the business thriving and all the while raising Poppy and Harry, who some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting at some of our events in New York and Florida.
