Tartan Tales of Clan Chattan

Throughout the month of August we have been celebrating all things Clan Chattan. We have met some famous faces, visited many sites, and gained great insight into the history of this ancient clan. Finally, we called upon the valued Clan members to share their stories; read the blog to find out more!

Cindi from Clan Chattan Association kindly shared an image from their recent AGM! We hope they had a wonderful time.

Joe and Trish at Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, North Carolina

Joe - birth name F. Kent Eason-Boswell - was delighted we were celebrating one of his clans this month and he kindly shared a couple of photos for us to use!

Joe says of his photo above: "This is a photo of my wife Trish and I at the largest Clan gathering and Highland Games in the world. In 2024 we had 108 Clans represented and around 50K to 60K people in attendance. The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games at MacRae Meadows in Linville, North Carolina. Our state has the largest Scottish immigrant population of any state in the US. Nearly everything here has a Scottish name."

Here Joe is "hanging out with our Boston, Finley. I think we're going for a walk." 

We think Joe looks very dapper in his Chattan tartan.

MacGillivray Clan Gathering at Scotland, CT Highland Games 2023

Birk also shared a great picture on our Facebook. MacGillivray is one of the clans in the Clan Chattan confederation.

Birk shares, "this was our annual gathering which tied into Scotland, CT Highland Games 10/8/23. Great to have our Commander Iain Donald MacGillivray visit from the real Scotland, he is under "vr" on red tent. Commander Iain enjoyed seeing the Scotland Fire and Police vehicles! Thankful you had a tent there, I bought a belt buckle after mine broke the day before. I'm wearing your buckle in center, holding dog and staff of Honored Clan."

Clan Chattan Association Flag

Kevin Greig, a professional heraldic artist, shared these fantastic photos of the Clan Chattan flag. Kevin worked on the design for the Clan Chattan Association's coat of arms. 

"Delighted to share the Clan Chattan arms I was privileged to work on with the late Norman Macpherson KHT, OLJ, OMLJ, CSt.N, FSA(Scot), Burgess of Guild of the City and Royal Burgh of Aberdeen and Personal Bannerman to Sir William Alan – Chief of Clan Macpherson. It was only achievable with the support of his wife, Mary Macpherson CLJ, OMLJ." 

"Norman saw the design completed before his passing in 2020. The sallet for helm was later updated, but this is the version Norman saw. Lord Lyon presented the association with their Letters Patent - beautifully painted by the Lyon Court artists in Inverness and a credit to the endeavours of both Norman and Mary."
