Throughout the month of July we have been celebrating all things Clan Lamont. We have met some famous faces, visited many sites, and gained great insight into the history of this ancient clan. Finally, we called upon the valued Clan members to share their stories and we had a fantastic response; read the blog to find out more!

Amy's Gran's Lamont Quilt

Amy Mc Kenzie Lamont clan Gran Amy's Gran

Amy got in touch with a beautiful story about her Gran and her Gran's Lamont quilt:

"My Gran, born in Dundee in 1920, was many things, including a maker of quilts. One of her grandsons, Brett, loved the quilt Gran made for him so much that it was becoming threadbare in places. Last summer he asked me if I could repair his quilt and though I was reluctant to put scissors to Gran’s quilt, we devised a plan that would honor the history of our family and Gran’s original work, while giving the quilt new life. Later that summer, while I was visiting Edinburgh, I stumbled upon ScotlandShop during one of my afternoon walks. My attention was drawn immediately to a bolt of Lamont tartan - our family plaid!

Brett and I had been scouring the internet for authentic Lamont plaid to use in his quilt; this was it. In talking with the salesperson I learned of Dundee plaid and knew that this would be the perfect addition to pay homage to Gran’s birthplace. Brett’s quilt, originally crafted with love by Gran, is now showcased in a wide border of Lamont plaid. The quilt is bound with Dundee plaid and quilted with a Celtic knot pattern. Gran loved Scotland and she loved her grandchildren; my hope is that this quilt allows her legacy of love to be passed on for years to come."

Phil and Anne's Lamont Wedding

Phil sent us his wonderful Lamont wedding photo and their adventure sourcing his Lamont kilt:

"Our wedding on 18 March 2023, 10 years to the day when we met. I say to her, I want to get a kilt for the wedding!  Ok she says. Only now, it’s only about 7-8 weeks away. The only reliable place that will guarantee it being delivered in 6 weeks is ScotlandShop. And, I/we would have to go to Edinburgh to be measured. So, off we go, from London to Edinburgh on Valentine’s Day to get measured for my Lamont kilt. It would help if I got the right place when we got there, but no, we walk down to the docks only to realise that the place we need is just around the corner from Waverley station. All ends well and my kilt is delivered by courier almost a week before our special day. Thank you. Phil & Anne Lemon"

Mia and Dan's Lamont Wedding

We had a lovely email from Mia and Dan, sharing their beautiful Lamont tartan:

"I am very excited to see that Clan Lamont is being featured this month! I've attached a few photographs from our elopement in 2020 and our family renewal on a steam engine in 2021. My husband is Scottish and he wore his kilt in his family Clan Lamont ancient for our wedding and renewal. Our dog Franklin can also be seen lounging on our Clan Lamont blanket."

Julee's Lamont Ancestry

Julees grandad Julee's Grandad Donald Lamont

Julee also got in touch and told us about her Grandad, Donald James Lamont, who was the radio operator on the SS Trevessa, and one of its survivors.

He was the one who sent out an SOS when the SS Trevessa was sinking. The SS Trevessa was a steamship that foundered on June 4, 1923. The ship was 11 days out of Freemantle and headed to Antwerp when it sank. The crew took to the lifeboats, but sadly 11 men died. The lifeboat voyage was described as "one of the most remarkable that has been made for many years".

Julee also told us about another great family member of Lamont, her Great Grandfather. He was John Lamont of Mieldorrach, a taxidermist to the Duke of Fife who did the stags in the famous Mar Lodge.

And finally, Julee also mentioned another great famous family member, Johann von Lamont, a famous astronomer from Braemar Scotland where Julee's Dad was raised. You might remember from our Famous Faces of Clan Lamont blog that Johann von Lamont was a famous astronomer. He was Julee's father's great great uncle.

We are loving all these Lamont connections, Julee!

Sue's Lamont Wedding

Sue Lamont 2

Sue emailed us these wonderful photos for our Clan of the Month celebrations.

Sue Lamont

"Attached are 2 photos of our wedding 14 years ago showing the men of the wedding party wearing Lamont tartan (apart from the best man who wore his own!).  Then 13 years later my husband and I went on a cruise holiday when he wore his kilt for the celebration dinner.

It's really interesting reading the history of the Lamont clan, thank you for sharing."

You are welcome, Sue!

Greg Vickery posted this great photo on our Facebook and we had to share it:

"Here is a picture of my wife Susan and I with the Chief of Clan Lamont, Father Peter Lamont, in 2018 - in Sydney NSW Australia."

Fantastic!

Charlotte and Sean's Lamont Wedding

Charlotte and Sean got married at Scorrier House in Cornwall with a traditional handfasting ceremony and Quaich ceremony. Charlotte's Father wore Lamont Modern, the same kilt he wore for his wedding and passed the family tartan to Sean who took the Samson name.

Sean wore a Lamont Ancient kilt handed down by Charlotte's Father, and Charlotte had both tartans incorporated into her outfit, bouquet and the handfasting tie to symbolise both men in her life. Sean and Charlotte's son Raphy wearing a Lamont bow tie.

Unfortunately July has come to an end, that certainly doesn't mean our love for Clan Lamont is over, so be sure to get in touch with us if you fancy chatting all things Lamont!
