Doddie Weir and his famous tartan trews
If you were watching the world renowned Melrose Sevens rugby tournament last weekend you might have spotted one of Scotland's ex-international rugby stars doing the pitchside interviews in a fine pair of yellow and black tartan trousers. Doddie Weir is well known for his tartan regalia and for the last few years we have been working with Doddie to supply some bold and brave and some more restrained trews and suits. Those long legs take a lot of tartan cloth!
Formally known as George Weir, Borders born and bred Doddie usually storms into the ScotlandShop offices and creates mayhem with yet another last minute request for tartan. Doddie had a similar effect on the Scottish rugby scene from when he started playing rugby for his school in Edinburgh. Returning closer to home in the Scottish Borders after a spell at college Doddie played at the home of Rugby Sevens, Melrose RFC, to play as part of the team that won six Scottish club championships. The boss' husband's claim to fame is that he also played in that team! Doddie was first capped for Scotland against Argentina in 1990 and went on to gain 61 Scottish caps.
With a spell playing for Newcastle Falcons as part of his career Doddie can now be found in his black and white tartan trews (Menzies Black and White tartan) keeping the guests in hospitality amused. Frequently seen on TV commentating on international matches and speaking at many a dinner in his favourite suit. Pictured top this is the Pride of Scotland Ancient tartan. Watch this space as we are working on a new one that combines several tartans in one suit!
