My Name’5 DODDIE: The Autobiography
Last night Sarah and Emily had the pleasure of attending the launch of our favourite tartan wearing rugby hero, Doddie Weir's autobiography. Described as "a brilliant, emotional and compelling read: a celebration of a remarkable life experience with the glass very much half full from one of our best-loved sporting icons. Packed with anecdotes and laughter from his playing career and a life well lived, it's also the poignant story of the challenges Doddie now faces following his MND diagnosis."
They brought me a copy back and I am looking forward to getting tucked up in bed to read Doddie's story myself this evening. My husband was lucky enough to play rugby at Melrose with Doddie and there must be so many people out there who have shared experiences with this great character, childhood adventures, rugby tours and nights out, the editing process must have been tough with so much content and all the mischief Doddie has got up to!
Family is so important to Doddie and if you have been lucky enough to meet any of the other Weir's you will know that they are all big personalities with the same zest for life. Brought up on the farm, this is one of the communities who have rallied round following Doddie's MND diagnosis, with the Tractor Run taking over Lauderdale last November to raise funds and awareness of Motor Neuron Disease. Hopefully their taste in trousers was a little better than those Doddie favoured in his youth!
Our involvement comes in the form of tartan, as the suppliers of the wild tartan suits Doddie has sported over the years and more recently the design and manufacture of the Doddie'5 tartan. Our in house designer, Emily, was challenged to combine the yellow and black of Melrose, the blue and white of the Saltire, with the black and white of the Newcastle Falcons to create Doddie's very own tartan. We do love the resulting Doddie5 Tartan and the big man certainly wears it well.
Just watch out for our next creation at the Doddie5 Cup in Cardiff. Both nations will be represented in fine style!
