What's not to love about Scotland?
February is a month traditionally filled with love so we were delighted to take an opportunity to discover what people love about Scotland. Whether you've never been to Scotland before, visited a few times or are lucky enough to live here; everyone has a love story to tell about this wonderful country and we're here to tell the story. This week I've been on the hunt to find out what ScotlandShop staff have to say so read on to find out their stories!
Over the years, I've been lucky enough to discover the depth of Scotland's beauty. During August of last year, I managed to have a breath taking bank holiday getaway to the West Coast, discovering the beautiful towns of Fort William and Oban, whilst also testing the fitness by climbing Scotland's highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Another favourite trip of mine back in 2019 was taking a trip over the sea to the Isle of Skye. The landscape, wildlife and vast amount of friendly tourists were all reasons why I'll definitely be heading back and I would recommend anyone visiting Scotland to take a trip up to the Isle of Skye. Scotland is filled with beautiful landmarks up and down the country. Whether you're looking to take a trip to see one of Scotland's many famous castles or you're in search of one of the country's best beaches, you're guaranteed to find somewhere beautiful to visit. Speaking of beaches, Ione, who is part of our customer experience team here at ScotlandShop said:
I love Scottish beaches, they're lovely to visit both on a hot summer's day and a cold, crisp winter's day.
Our Operations Manager, Kate, recently moved up from the south coast of England, so she must have had good reason to! Kate echoed Ione's love for beaches and told me:
"You really can't beat them. The vast stretches of sand, the beautiful landscape that surrounds them and the fact there is no need to practically sit on some strangers lap to get a space for the day!"
I have to agree, no one enjoys looking for a car parking space for hours on end and there is nothing quite like having a deserted beach all to yourself. Some of my favourite beaches include West Sands (St. Andrew's), Thorntonloch (Dunbar) and Portobello (Edinburgh).
We're extremely fortunate to have a range of beautiful walks and climbs in Scotland. The Scottish Munros attract people from all over the world and for good reason too. Did you know that there are a total of 282 Munros in Scotland? Over 6000 people have climbed them all so far, completing what is known as "Munro bagging". Amy, our tech savvy digital marketing executive, is a big fan of exploring the Scottish outdoors and told me what she loves most about it all.
My favourite thing of all is that there is always somewhere new to explore, whether that be an abandoned castle just up the road from your house, or driving two hours to climb one of the beautiful Munros. I am yet to climb my first Munro, but I have quite a few of them on my bucket list, and I can't wait to start exploring!
One thing that really makes Scotland the way it is, is the people. Having only started my ScotlandShop journey within the past month, I can certainly confirm that the Scots are a lovely bunch. Tasmin, a customer service expert of ours, told me:
One of my favourite things about Scotland is how friendly and multicultural our cities are. I feel like we really embrace everyone and make them feel at home.
Scots are also commonly known for their patriotism, and rightly so - there's so much to love about this country. If the following quote from Emily, our marketing manager, doesn't sum up the Scotland, then I'm not too sure what will?
I think what I love most about Scotland is that we are proud to be a bit different, our men are known for wearing kilts, we don't just eat meat, we make haggis, our cows are hairy highlanders and our national animal is a Unicorn! We love to celebrate the traditions that make us unique and to share all of the amazing historical stories attached to our clans & castles.
ScotlandShop's founder, Anna, has been lucky enough to travel all over the world with the company during its almost 20 year history. From Highland Games in the heart of Scotland, to pop up events in New York, Anna has certainly experienced a lot of culture but she told me why Scotland will always hold a special place in her heart.
I love the Scottish people, the hardy, feisty prepared to work hard side to us which is why I am sure there are so many Scottish inventors and entrepreneurs, we are creative people and we don't like to give up. I also love the self-deprecating sense of humour. We don't take ourselves too seriously north of the border and Billy Connelly probably sums it up nicely. The other thing I love most about our beautiful country is the landscape, the wide open spaces and the variety; from sitting in the ScotlandShop HQ in Duns gazing out over green fields to driving over the Lammermuirs through heather covered hills and the next minute you're in Edinburgh with it's mix of old tenements and modern living. It never gets old!
