The name Lloyd was first recorded in mid-eastern Wales in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, as well as the ancient medieval kingdom of Powys where the Lloyd dynasty held a family seat. The name itself originated from the Welsh word of 'llwyd' which is most often understood as meaning 'grey'. Lloyd is one of the most common names to come out of Wales during the modern era, with the welsh spelling Llywd still used today.

Ancient Tartan

Weathered Tartan

Hunting Tartan
Les tartans de chasse (Hunting tartans) sont les tartans de camouflage et certains clans n'ont pas ces variations parce qu'ils sont déjà à dominante verte ou brune et n'ont pas besoin d'être modifiés pour se fondre dans les couleurs de la nature. Les tartans Black Watch ou Gunn en sont des exemples, tandis qu'un tartan comme le Fraser est à dominante rouge et n'offrirait pas une grande couverture aux hommes qui partent à la chasse.

Les tartans d'apparat (Dress Tartans) ont été conçus, comme leur nom l'indique, pour les célébrations et les danses des Highlands. The name itself originated from the Welsh word of 'llwyd' which is most often understood as meaning 'grey'. Lloyd is one of the most common names to come out of Wales during the modern era, with the welsh spelling Llywd still used today.
The Lloyd family of Maesyfelin in Cardiganshire is believed to date back to a Welsh ancestor who captured Cardigan castle from the Norman invaders in 1164. The first of this family to adopt the Lloyd name was Gwilym Lloyd in the 14th century. The main branch moved to Carmarthenshire in the early 1600’s.

The Lloyd Welsh tartan is mainly grey, potentially due to connotations of the Welsh name llywd which translates to grey, and also has red, black and green accents throughout.
