New York City Tartan Week - The Story Behind the Celebration
What is National Tartan Day?
Tartan Day first originated in Canada after the President of Clan Lamont proposed that there should be a day where Scottish heritage could be widely celebrated, and so it was decided that April 6 would be National Tartan Day. In 1998 the US senate first declared National Tartan Day to recognise the outstanding achievements and contributions made by Scottish Americans to the United States. In the lead up to the announcement the Senate realised that almost half of the signatures on the United States Declaration of Independence had Scottish descent. A decade later in 2008, President George W. Bush signed a Presidential Proclamation making April 6 National Tartan Day. Tartan Day has been celebrated in the USA every year since. The most popular celebration is the parade that is held in New York every year, with people travelling from all over the world to attend. The NYC Tartan Day Parade has become so popular that it has grown into a week of Scottish celebrations, which is known as New York City Tartan Week.
Why April 6th?
The 6th of April was chosen as this is the date on which the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. The declaration announced Scotland's independence from England and it's said that this inspired the United States Declaration of Independence many years later.
Where is National Tartan Day Celebrated?
National Tartan Day is celebrated not only in the US, but also in Canada, Scotland and even Argentina. Australia and New Zealand also celebrate an International Tartan Day but they actually celebrate this on the 1st July. This is another important date in Scottish history as it's the anniversary of the Repeal Proclamation of 1782 which abolished the Act of Proscription of 1747. The Act of Proscription declared wearing kilts and tartan a punishable offence and if caught Scots could face up to seven years of transportation.
New York, New York
There are many Tartan Day celebrations throughout the United States, but New York certainly leads the way, not only holding an annual Tartan Day Parade, but a full week of celebratory events. Activities for the week kick off with a Scottish Ceilidh dance workshop, followed by Cocktail Evening, Gaelic workshops, Pipes & Drums Performance, Pre-Parade Ceilidh, Kirkin O' The Tartan and many other family friendly activities. Each event is held by various Scottish charities and societies, hoping to give participants a true representation of Scottish culture and honor the special friendship that the USA has with Scotland.
The first parade was set up in 1999 by two pipe bands alongside a small but enthusiastic group of Scottish Americans. Led by their Grand Marshal, Academy Award-winning Actor Cliff Robertson, the group marched from the British Consulate to the United Nations Headquarters.
Following on from the first parade, the event has continued to grow and now includes hundreds of pipers as well as thousands of marchers and spectators. With so many activities surrounding the parade The National Tartan Day New York Committee was formed in 2002 to organise the parade and the now week-long list of fabulous Scottish themed events.

2019's Grand Marshal
The very first year ScotlandShop participated in the Parade was the year The Big Yin, Sir William Connolly was Grand Marshal. Sir Billy moved to the US in 2011 and announced his retirement from live performances in December. Sir Billy first started performing as part of the Folk Rock Band, the Humblebums and was a member of the band until 1974. In the early 70's he also launched both his solo artist and comedic careers. Sir Billy is best known as a comedian but has also had many successful acting roles. His nickname The Big Yin was first used during his adolescent years to differentiate between himself and his father.
He was 'Big Billy' and I was 'Wee Billy'. And then I got bigger than him, and the whole thing got out of control. I became The Big Yin in Scotland. So, we'd go into the pub and someone would say, 'Billy Connolly was in.' 'Oh? Big Billy or Wee Billy?' 'The Big Yin.' 'Oh, Wee Billy.'
Despite having retired he graciously accepted the role of Grand Marshal.
"I’m thrilled to be this year’s Grand Marshal of the New York City Tartan Day Parade. I can’t wait to hear all those bagpipes echoing off the skyscrapers and to see Sixth Avenue awash with thousands of swaying kilts. It’s going to be brilliant."
2023's Grand Marshal
We are huge fans of the gritty Scot leading the Parade in 2023, a student of Portobello High School just outside Edinburgh before starting her career in media and TV. If you don't already know her, Gail Porter is a Scottish television personality, former model and actress renowned for her honesty about the ups and downs of her career, which began in children's TV, before she progressed into modelling and presenting mainstream TV. Since 2005, Porter has been affected by alopecia, a condition which causes hair loss and in true, bold Gail style she decided not to wear a hat or wig in order to raise awareness of the condition. She became ambassador for the Little Princess Trust, a charity which provides wigs to children with hair loss. “I’m so honoured to be named grand marshal of the NYC Tartan Day Parade this year. Being a proud Scottish woman leading such a significant event in NYC, while supporting World Fair Trade Tartan alongside the incredibly gifted young musicians of Pulse of the Place, shows the global impact of Scottish culture – that we can be an example of diversity, inclusivity, creativity, and resilience throughout the world."

2024's Grand Marshall
We are excited the Emmy Award-winning Scottish actor, Dougray Scott, will be 2024's Grand Marshal. Dougray is known for starring in Mission: Impossible 2 opposite Tom Cruise, Ever After with Dew Barrymore, Deep Impact with Robert Duvall, and many TV series like Desperate Housewives, and more recently, BBC's Vigil.
For his role in the series Crime, he was awarded both a BAFTA Scotland Award for Best Actor - Television, and an Emmy for Best Performance by an Actor in 2022.
Did you know Dougray was called Most Promising Student when he trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama? We think he has delivered on that name!
To honor his mother's Scottish heritage, Dougray will be wearing a 16oz custom weathered Strome kilt in his mother's clan tartan, Morrison.

“I couldn’t be prouder or happier to have been asked to be the 2024 NYC Tartan Day Parade Grand Marshal. And also to be wearing the Morrison tartan, the tartan of my mother’s family. She’ll be looking down from on high with pride in her Scottish heart, God bless her Glaswegian cotton socks! May the chief let his sun shine all the way from Leith to NYC!”
2025 Grand Marshall
Award winning Scottish actor and author Alan Cumming will be 2025's Grand Marshall.
Cumming is known most for his versatile on screen career. Starting in 'The Good House Wife', as Eli Gold and more recently Hosting 'The Traitors US'.
Along side his screen fame he is also a Tony award winning theatre actor.
He added Author to his resume, when he released 'Not My Father's Son", a memoir about the struggles he faced growing up.
To honour his heritage Alan will be wearing a custom made tartan, dubbed 'Weathered Cumming', which is similar to the Cumming Weathered tartan.

2026 Grand Marshall
Sam Heughan will be back as Grand Marshall in the 2026 parade.
Sam was first Grand Marshall back in to 2016, and is excited to be returning 10 years on, in a full circle moment.
Heughan is best known for his staring role in the Outlander series, as Jamie Fraser. You can find out more about the Outlander universe on our blog.

Shot of Scotch- Kendra
We caught up with Kendra from acclaimed Highland Dance group Shot of Scotch to learn more about their love of this Scottish tradition and their involvement in the Tartan Day Parade. We can't wait to meet the group and get a few top tips before the Caledonian Club Ceilidh on Friday night.
How did you first get involved in Highland Dancing?
After watching my older sister have an early and very successful start to her Highland Dance career, I told my parents I wanted to start too at age 7. Luckily we were living in NC at the time where Scottish culture is easy to come by and a large highland dance community was already established.
What inspired you to co-found Shot of Scotch New York City?
I moved to NYC in 2010 and had taken almost 10 years off of dance. Eager to get back in shape and back into dance, I connected with fellow adult premier (highest competitive level) dancers who were interested in us all starting a performance group. The group is ever changing. New York is never a stagnant place, causing dancers to move, take breaks due to family/school/job. At present day - we have 12 members!
What is your involvement in the Tartan Day Parade?
Since 2012, Shot of Scotch NYC, has participated in the NYC Tartan Day Parade. I have been a part of the fun- all but that first year (which included proudly dancing up 6th Ave during 2 pregnancies). The whole Tartan Week is a highlight for our group! We all have the 1st week in April blocked out for years to come.
I hear you have expanded to Vancouver too?
Shot of Scotch Vancouver was formed when 2 of the founding members moved there and decided to continue the fun, starting up a group there. Since then we haven’t collaborated or performed together but continue to support each other from afar and are happy for each groups individual success.
Are there any other large events that you perform at regularly?
I have been lucky enough to be regularly invited to the Mohonk Mountain House: Scottish Weekend- such a treat! Shot of Scotch NYC has made regular appearances at the NYC Dance Parade, Mermaid Parade in Coney Island, Long Island Scottish Festival, West Point Military Tattoo, and of course the Offical Pre-Tartan Day Parade Ceilidh. Via application process we feel fortunate to have been accepted into the 8-in-Show through Dixon Theater where we had worked on new choreography pieces each year.
Do you have a favourite dance to perform together?
Scottish Highland Dance tends to be an individual dance- so any time we get to “interact” with each other it’s always fun. Either doing turns together in a Half Tulloch or collaborating in a choreography- we tend to really bring our personality out during these times.
Do you perform in a certain tartan or do you all choose your own tartan to wear?
We each have our performance or competition kilts that were picked by the individual dancer, but about 5 years ago, kilt maker, Bonnie Greene made our group mini kilts in the official NYC Tartan which we use to perform and wear to events.
What’s involved in getting ready for a large performance such as tartan week?
Luckily many of our dances are from a traditional set, which is why we are only for highland dancers who have obtained the “Premier” level of dance. But now that our group is growing- it has been fun to add in new choreography which we take most of the year to master. We hold weekly rehearsals to prepare us for the performances we have throughout the year, and especially for Tartan Week.
How can people get involved with the group & Highland Dancing in general?
Any and everyone is invited to give it a try. We currently have 4 certified teachers and classes are offered throughout the week. On the occasion, I will hear from a former Premier dancer who wants to start up again, and those are welcome to try a Shot of Scotch NYC rehearsal. We are always eager to spread our passion for this athletic and cultural art form through workshops, lessons, performances, or things like this! Our website is a great starting point (www.shotofscotch.com) or following us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram!
Thank you so much to Kendra and Shot of Scotch for sharing their story. If you are also performing during Tartan Week in New York or anywhere else in the world please get in touch as we would love to hear from you.
Clan Davidson- John Dawson
In 2018, the Clan won the title of "Most Represented Clan" and of course this is a title the clan are looking to defend this year. We spoke to John Dawson, President of the Clan Davidson Society of North America to find out more about how they came to claim the title in 2018. The North American society is just one of the four Clan Davidson membership groups worldwide. The other three groups are based in New Zealand, Australia and the UK.
Do Clan Davidson attend the New York City Tartan Day Parade every year?
We have had Davidson's in the Parade almost every year, however we have been marching as a Clan for only the past 3 years, since I have taken office.
How many members travelled to the parade last year in order for you to win "Most Represented Clan"?
We had 27 marching with the Clan last year, we had many more in attendance, but they were committed to other organisations. Last year our youngest marcher was 8, but our youngest ever was one year old. Our longest marching member is Darwin Davidson who is now in his eighties, he has been marching since the first few years of the New York City Tartan Day Parade.
Was this the first time the clan have won the title?
It is my understanding that last was the first year for the award. I was told on the Sunday after the Parade that we had the most people marching as a Clan, although it wasn't until September that I was made aware of the title.
Were all of the 27 members marching from the USA or did anyone travel from further afield?
In 2017 they were all Americans, but that has not always been the case.
Are there any other events the Clan attend regularly?
You will find a Clan Davidson tent at Highland Games and Celtic events worldwide, even our Clan Chief and his wife host a tent in New Zealand. In America and Canada our presence has grown every year in the recent years.
Are your Clan marching in the New York City Tartan Day Parade this year? We will also be hosting a Pop-Up Store & Measuring Service at the New Yorker Hotel on April 3rd & 4th so feel free to come and say hello.
New York City Tartan Week - The New York Edinburgh Comparison
We’ve called Edinburgh home since August 2017 when we opened our flagship store in the West End of the City. Every week in April we pop up in New York, as part of the New York City Tartan Week celebrations, you can find details of our pop up shops here.
As we head to New York to experience New York City Tartan Week, we thought we’d compare both the differences and similarities between the two cities.
New York is renowned for its iconic skyscrapers towering high above the city, but this wouldn’t be associated as easily with Edinburgh. Instead of a city full of new and shiny buildings, Edinburgh has just one very important building high in the sky. Edinburgh Castle is actually built on top of a dormant volcano meaning this is one of the highest points in the city centre.
Layout
Even with a map it can be quite difficult to navigate your way around the wynds of Edinburgh, not only do you have to navigate in terms of direction but also in height. Edinburgh is built on numerous levels, so where you may be expecting a cross roads, you in fact may end up on a bridge above the street you wanted to turn on to. New York on the other hand has a very well thought out grid layout, making it really easy to find your way around.
Transport
The yellow Taxis of New York have become one of the many icons associated with the city. In Edinburgh taxis follow the design of the London Black Cabs but now thanks to some creative advertising many of the taxis display the branding of a few of our iconic brands such as Irn-Bru and Tunnock's. I always referred to this as the Tunnock’s Taxi but I was recently corrected that they actually refer to this as the Tea Cake Taxi or Caramel Cab.
New York has the largest subway systems in the World with 472 stations, so there aren't many places in the city you can't reach via public transport. Edinburgh may not have an underground service but in 2014 a new Tram line was opened, taking passengers directly from the Airport to the heart of the city centre.
Statues
Possibly the biggest icon of not only New York but the United States is the Statue of Liberty. Lady Liberty is located on Liberty Island, very close to Ellis Island where all immigrants to the USA used to come through when entering the country by ship. In the heart of Edinburgh between Princes Street and the gardens behind, the Scott Monument can be found. This impressive Gothic monument honours the famous Scottish author, Sir Walter Scott who resided in the Scottish Borders. His home, Abbotsford, is now a popular tourist destination as well as his favourite viewpoint, now known as Scott’s View.
Pizza
We believe it’s mandatory to grab a slice of pizza when in the Big Apple, after all it is said to be some of the best in the pizza world, despite a long running rivalry with the Deep Dish of Chicago! We are yet to decide on our favourite, but we are heading to Chicago this June so we’ll be able to cast our verdict later in the year. Scotland has some amazing local produce but unfortunately we fear we may have become better known for our array of deep fried dishes, including both Mars Bars and Pizza. As much as we’d rather support a much healthier home grown meal we do have to admit that both are actually quite tasty, especially when enjoyed after a whisky or two.
Tartans
Both the New York and Edinburgh tartans have lovely blue backgrounds. The Edinburgh tartan was designed in 1970 by the late Hugh McPherson to commemorate the Commonwealth Games being held in the City that year. The New York City tartan was designed much more recently in 2002 to celebrate NYC Tartan Week.
Tunes of Glory -NYC Tartan
The New York City tartan was originally called 'Tunes of Glory'. The colours represent different parts of the city with green for Central Park, blue for the rivers that surround Manhattan and two black stripes to honour the memory of the twin towers which were destroyed on '9/11'. The name of the tartan was changed at the request of Mayor Giuliani following the attack.
The New York City Tartan Week Tartan
The centrepiece of the New York City Tartan Parade is 6th Avenue, represented within the tartan design by 6 grey stripes. The colours of three important flags are represented in the asymmetric design: the blue, white and orange of New York city's own flag; the red, white and blue of the Star Spangled Banner; and the blue and white of the Scottish Saltire.
New York City Tartan Day Parade: What to Wear?
If you're lucky enough to be headed to New York for the Tartan Day Parade you may be struggling with what to wear. Whether you're marching or cheering from the sidelines there are loads of options to choose from. Come rain or shine we will be there with our mascot, Tam the Tailor, the best dressed gentleman in town.
According to the New York Tartan Day Parade guidelines, "There is no theme or dress requirement for the parade. Kilts, Tartan and anything that shows off your Scottish pride is obviously encouraged!" With over 500 tartans and so many styles to choose from, you would be forgiven for being overwhelmed by the options available.
If something personal and unique is what you're after, then there is no better way to show your clan pride while marching and celebrating arm in arm with your Scottish family than wearing something custom tailored in your very own Clan Tartan. As you will be alongside other Scots and tartan enthusiasts it's great fun seeing how many people can pick up on your clan just by looking at your outfit.
If you're looking for something traditional, why not stand out in your very own custom made kilt? For the Parade I recommend a custom 4 yard Casual Kilt, which you can accessorise with a dressed down Sweater (or one of our smart Tweed Argyll Jackets) and a Sporran like our model below:
Get the breeze on your knees.
As the dress code leaves room for interpretation, if you prefer a more casual, relaxed look, I recommend one of our custom Tartan Shirts for an outfit you can wear again and again to show your clan pride day to day. Our shirt pairs nicely with a pair of jeans and Brogues or perhaps a pair of our super comfortable Tartan Trainers. Great for the after party and a few Belhaven beers in The Tailor Pub after the parade too.
Smart Casual for the City Slicker
For Ladies, our All Round Pleated Skirt is a classic take on kilt pleats. You can have it made to measure choosing your tartan and your length depending on your preference. The only problem is deciding on a suitable length; a knee length skirt never goes out of style but calf length skirts and dresses have been very popular so far this season... Either way you'll have a timeless piece for your wardrobe, especially when it has so much more meaning than something off the rack.
If you're looking for something more formal or just love a fitted style, you can choose one of our Tartan Shift Dresses in a variety of sleeve styles. These are easily dressed up or down depending on your choice of accessories. Perfect for last year's parade in the blazing sunshine....let's hope it is the same this year. Worn here with black pumps and a clutch bag all that is missing is a Clan Crest Badge to take you to one of the various Tartan Day after parties, and it also looks great with a plain cardigan and a matching tartan brooch for celebrating on 6th avenue.
If a full outfit is feeling a bit much for you and you want to break up the pattern, then a hat or scarf in your clan tartan is a great alternative and very versatile. You can also co-ordinate with your partner or friends while out and about like our models below who are wearing different variations of the Thompson Tartan. Alternatively why not go for the classic Scottish event wear and don a Wool Tartan Sash over your right shoulder?
If you're struggling to find a clan tartan that speaks to you, you don't have a clan association yourself or you just want an excuse to buy something new you can always wear the Tartan Sporran Bag to stand out from the 1000's strong crowd.
Our Tartan Trainers are a firm favourite of ours and incredibly comfortable, as our resident trainer enthusiast Emily will attest. She famously lay down on the sidewalk in minus 7 degrees on 6th avenue during one of her visits to New York to get the perfect photo with those yellow taxis in the background. Emily also tested them out on her adventures around the city and deemed them perfect for walking the 10 blocks down 6th avenue!
Whatever tartan you choose to wear, it's sure to be a great day. Our pop up will be open from 3rd-4th April, and I'm a New York City newbie so even if you already have an outfit already make sure you come and say hello!
