Now that the holiday season is over it’s time for us to turn our attention to the next set of special occasions. We have all your Burns night needs under control, but since Christmas and New Year most of our social media has been filled with beautiful engagement announcements and some very sparkly rings.
So, as we step into a shiny new decade what can we expect from a 2020 wedding?
Whether you are one of the loved up couples sending out your save the dates or a maid of honour trying to keep your bridezilla at bay; from classic elegance to something more ‘out there’ there are new trends this year to suit everyone. You can also find last years blog here.
COLOUR
Perhaps unsurprisingly with the Pantone ‘Colour of the Year’ recently revealed to be Classic Blue – described as a familiar, calming shade of azure – 2020 brides are working with bolder colour palettes and richer tones in a big way. Gone are the days of subtle choices such as blush pinks, pastel greens and off white. This year we’re incorporating our favourite bright, rich colours and patterns into everything from glassware and napkins to flowers and even the wedding party wardrobe.
SUSTAINABILITY
The key word for weddings this year is Sustainability.
Perhaps walking in the footsteps of princess Eugenie, who famously made her day plastic free, lots of young couples are focusing their efforts on ensuring they minimise wastefulness and their wedding’s carbon footprint. It is predicted that couples will increasingly be asking florists if they source their flowers locally with some working with entire plants as opposed to cut flowers, as well as avoiding Oasis or Floral Foam and others moving to dried arrangements and bouquets. Brides have been sourcing alternatives to confetti such as flower petals and bubbles and ditching the fireworks for the negative impact on the environment. They are also sourcing food more locally, choosing dishes that are in season and even choosing ethically made gowns.
DINING
Brides today are choosing to move away from segregated formal seating plans and are instead favouring long banquet tables to create a more intimate and comfortable setting for friends and family. These are often decorated with long table runners and flowing floral arrangements. They are also making bolder floral choices, selecting looser arrangements which may still cascade but aren’t as formal as previous table decor. This informality also extends to serving their tipples of choice from self-serve drinks carts or well curated speciality liquor bars alongside their favourite bites to eat from food stands and festival style eats.
VENUE
While destination or elopement style weddings will always have a presence, most couples seem to be staying closer to home with a steep increase in City Weddings. As the market has expanded, the offerings in cities have increased. Venues can range from decadent hotels and palaces to warehouses and art galleries. You can find our run down of our favourite Scottish Wedding Venues here. One of our ScotlandShop brides this year ordered her wedding outfit in tartan to wear at her wedding in the Melbourne district of Brunswick which made for a gorgeous modern aesthetic.
The big trends in Bridal Wear this year include separates such as tops and skirts as opposed to an all in one gown, or having a second dress more fit for dancing the night away at the reception, like the Duchess of Sussex. Another celebrity leading the way in this years trends is Ellie Goulding who was recently married in a Victoriana style gown. Veils are also a hot topic, the rule is go big or don’t bother, with mega veils making a splash some even with bespoke embroidery like Hailey Baldwin/Biebers ‘Til death do us part’ veil.

WEDDING PARTY
Grooms are increasingly more involved in choosing what they and their best man will be wearing on the day and we are seeing lots more grooms choosing to wear bold patterns and mixed textures. The secret to wearing pattern is to choose a more classic style and pair it with a bolder fabric. Why not pair some Slim Cut Tartan Trousers with a co-ordinating Tweed Jacket or go super dapper and with a custom Tartan Tails Coat. You can also introduce pattern in smaller ways such a cheeky colourful Tartan Bow Tie or Tartan Braces.
The Bridesmaids are also erring more and more towards mis-matching or eclectic dresses with some even choosing outfits or jumpsuits in similar colour ways and palettes. We love the way this bride has used a similar colour palette while mixing up her bridesmaids Tartan Bolero Jackets.
We are looking forward to exploring these in more depth this weekend at Your Wedding Exhibition in Aberdeen, where you can find us on stand F6. We'll have some of our favourite wedding looks on the runway and we'll be keeping you up to date with our adventures on Facebook and Instagram.
What seems to be a common theme among these trends is that couples want their day to be more individual and personal to them. The best advice we have for this years trends is to pick one that speaks to you and roll with it, because you love it and not because it’s the ‘in thing to do’.
