How to make a tartan doggie bandanna

If you have been following our pet series so far you will be delighted to know this is the first in our 'how-to-guides'. In this blog we will be learning how to create our very own tartan dog bandanna.

What you will need:

  • Tartan fabric
  • Basic sewing supplies/sewing machine
  • Velcro (optional)

For small dogs cut a 14" square of your fabric, for medium sized dogs cut an 18" square, for large dogs cut a 22" square, and for extra large dogs cut a 26" square.

The Method:

Step 1: Fold the square of fabric in half cut along the longest edge of the fabric to make two triangles.

Step 2: You will only need one of the triangles for this pattern, unless you have a particularly lightweight fabric and want to double over the fabric to help your bandanna to hold its shape. Finish the edges of the bandanna by folding in the edges twice, pinning the fabric in place and either hand sewing or machine sewing the seams.

Nearly there! This a is a great project for children or those new to sewing as it is nice and simple and let's face it, your dog is very loyal and unlikely to ever be rude about wobbly seams or wonky stitching.

Step 3: Check the edges and then you are all done. We have simply knotted our doggie bandanna to keep it simple but if you want a really professional finish you can add snaps to the two corners about 1.5 inches or 3.5cm from the point, making it easy to take the bandanna on and off. It all depends how well behaved your dog is.....mine is unlikely to sit still long enough for me to undo a knot!

We hope you and your four-legged friend enjoy your new accessory, and please share any pictures of your fantastic creations and beautiful pooches, and of course tell us which tartan you chose.
