The Tartan Design Process
Book Your
Tartan Design Consultation
To begin the creative process we will organise a Tartan Design Consultation via Video Call to allow you to get to know our in-house designer. During the consultation, we'll discuss all of your ideas, write a brief and talk you through the tartan registration process. Inspiration can come from a logo, brand colours, an existing event colour scheme or simply a selection of your favourite colours. If there are any significant dates, numbers or colour combinations we'll also look at ways we can incorporate these personal details into your design.
Your Mood Board
Tartan Inspiration
Following the consultation, our in-house designer will gather all of the ideas & inspiration discussed to write a brief, and create a digital mood board incorporating a suggested colour palette for your tartan.
CAD
Tartan Designs
We will use computer-aided design software to create a number of initial designs for you, at this point your tartan design will really begin to take shape. Initially, we will send these digitally and you can narrow down your favourite and discuss any amendments you'd like to make. Having decided upon a final design we will arrange for yarn samples to be sent to you in person so you can see exactly how the colours used to weave your tartan will look together.
Officially Registering
Your tartan design
The Scottish Register of Tartans is a division of the National Records of Scotland and where we will register your tartan. On approval, your tartan will be listed in the official online database, and you will be sent a certificate to authenticate your design. We will guide you through the criteria for registration and will liaise with The Scottish Register of Tartans on your behalf. Please note that the Keeper of the Scottish Register of Tartans may require us to make amendments to your application in order to grant approval of your design.
Bespoke Fabric
Weaving your Tartan
Now that you are the proud owner of an officially registered tartan we will help guide you on which weight and type of fabric will suit your needs and how much cloth to have woven, depending on the items you'd like to have made using your new design. We will discuss production timescales and any measurements required for your custom creations when placing your order. There is of course no obligation to have fabric woven.
