Work with our in-house designer to bring your very own tartan to life. Whether its Personal, for Family, a Business or Society, School, Team or Commemorative, the ScotlandShop team can help you design your tartan and create your unique piece of Scottish history.
To begin the creative process we will organize a Tartan Design Consultation via Video Call to allow you to get to know our in-house designer. During the consultation, we'll discuss all of your ideas, write a brief and talk you through the tartan registration process. Inspiration can come from a logo, brand colors, an existing event color scheme, or simply a selection of your favorite colors. If there are any significant dates, numbers, or color combinations we'll also look at ways we can incorporate these personal details into your design.
Following the consultation, our in-house designer will gather all of the ideas & inspiration discussed to write a brief, and create a digital mood board incorporating a suggested color palette for your tartan.
We will use computer-aided design software to create a number of initial designs for you, at this point your tartan design will really begin to take shape. Initially, we will send these digitally and you can narrow down your favorite and discuss any amendments you'd like to make. Having decided upon a final design we will arrange for yarn samples to be sent to you in person so you can see exactly how the colors used to weave your tartan will look together.
The Scottish Register of Tartans is a division of the National Records of Scotland and where we will register your tartan. On approval, your tartan will be listed in the official online database, and you will be sent a certificate to authenticate your design. We will guide you through the criteria for registration and will liaise with The Scottish Register of Tartans on your behalf. Please note that the Keeper of the Scottish Register of Tartans may require us to make amendments to your application in order to grant approval of your design.
Now that you are the proud owner of an officially registered tartan we will help guide you on which weight and type of fabric will suit your needs and how much cloth to have woven, depending on the items you'd like to have made using your new design. We will discuss production timescales and any measurements required for your custom creations when placing your order. There is of course no obligation to have fabric woven.

A selection of our previous tartan designs
We designed this tartan in 2018 with legendary rugby player Doddie Weir. It supports the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease research. The blue and white represent Scotland (Doddie's home nation), while black and yellow represent Melrose RFC (his first team) and black and white represent Newcastle Falcons.
Designed for Billie's 80th birthday, it incorporates colors from her company logo and "Billie Blue" winners jacket. The pattern honours her maiden name (Moffitt) by drawing inspiration from the Moffat Clan tartan. During her career, she won 39 major titles and challenged societal norms through the 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" match.
The Higher Orbits non-profit uses spaceflight to inspire high school students in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The tartan celebrates their partnership with Scot Forge (a metal forging company with Scottish heritage) and draws inspiration from stars and the Higher Orbits logo.
These tartans incorporate the official colours of The Washington Tattoo, which produces immersive experiences with global performers and military precision. They foster connections and build relationships between people, organisations, and businesses.
Designed for Valaris Limited, a major offshore drilling company operating across six continents, this tartan incorporates their official brand colours and fits well with their brand statement "We are bold. We are Valaris."
Choosing Albany as our US home, we designed a tartan for the local Scottish community. The tartan's colours reflect the Albany County Seal, Colonie Town Seal, and Albany City Flag. Its pattern draws inspiration from the Stewart Clan tartans, honouring Duke of Albany, James Stuart. A unique white stripe, not found in the Stewart tartans, forms a saltire, representing Scotland's patron saint, St. Andrew.
Inspired by the "Oak Green Metallic" paint option of a Porsche sports car, this medium green features subtle gold and grey metallic flakes. This unique colour, rarely chosen by owners, became the tartan's base, representing the car's body. Stripes of gold, black, and grey symbolize the wheels, tire details, and brake callipers.
The Adirondack Mountains of New York inspire the Plaidlife Adirondack Tartan collection. Their breath-taking landscape boasts vibrant colours that change with the seasons, directly influencing the tartan's design. These seasonal hues, deeply connected to the Adirondack experience, are meticulously woven into the collection, paying visual homage to the region's natural beauty.
