About Us

The year where it all began. In 2002 ScotlandShop was founded with a passion for sharing Scotland with the world. We initially launched selling a broad mix of Scottish crafts, gifts, food and textiles, laying the foundations for what would become a truly international tartan business rooted firmly in Scotland.

In 2003 we decided to focus on textiles, marking the point where we really began to concentrate on tartan. While we loved the crafts and food side of the business, it was too complex to scale and US customs were not keen on letting our haggis cross the Atlantic. This shift helped shape what followed.

Anna put her building skills to the test in 2004 as we moved into our newly renovated old granary. This hands on project gave us much needed space to grow and marked a turning point where ScotlandShop truly began to feel like a real, established business based in the Scottish Borders.

Our French language website launched in 2005 and was an immediate success. This early move into international markets confirmed that there was strong global demand for Scottish tartan and textiles and gave us the confidence to continue investing in translated websites and overseas customers.

Ali, our longest serving ScotlandShop employee, first joined the team. A decade later in 2016, after ten years of tartan service, we celebrated her contribution by awarding Ali a trophy and even a crown for the day, recognising her loyalty, expertise and commitment.

We introduced our range of custom made tartan shoes in collaboration with wedding shoe designer June Graham. Although June has since retired, the range continues to evolve and has grown into one of the most popular and distinctive collections on the ScotlandShop website.

In 2008 we re-launched our French and German websites, bringing them fully in line with the UK site in both design and functionality. Germany quickly became a key market for us, with the MacLeod Dress Modern tartan emerging as the top selling tartan for our German customers.

After steadily adding more translated websites over the previous few years, 2009 marked a major milestone when European sales overtook US sales for the first time. This shift reinforced the importance of localisation, international delivery and confirmed our growing presence across mainland Europe and beyond.

In September 2010 we re-launched all five of our websites following extensive customer research and years of learning. Working with a new agency and photographer, we introduced fresh ideas including our blog, improved usability and a stronger visual identity inspired by our customers.

We changed our tailored suit manufacturer in 2011 to offer customers greater choice and customisation. This allowed for personalised linings, waistcoat backs, cuts, buttons, vents, pockets and even buttonhole stitching colours, giving customers unprecedented control over their tartan suits.

Spring 2012 saw the launch of our Tailored Womenswear range. We introduced made to measure tartan jackets, trousers and waistcoats in a customer’s chosen tartan, alongside our very first tartan dress, marking an important expansion into womenswear tailoring.

On October 1st 2013 ScotlandShop officially incorporated to become a Limited Company. Browne White Ltd trading as ScotlandShop.com was born, combining Anna’s maiden name and married name, with registered Company Number 459117, formalising the business structure.

Our first ever Modern Apprentice joined us in September 2014 to help manage the Christmas rush. Auryn quickly became an invaluable part of the team and is still with ScotlandShop today as our Stock Team Leader. Along the way, Auryn also went on to win Scottish Apprentice of the Year in 2015.

After months of development, we unveiled our #drapeyourtartan feature in September 2015. For the first time, customers could see an artist’s impression of their chosen tartan and product, helping them visualise how special their finished piece would look. We continue to develop and refine this feature to this day.

In 2016 we gave both the website and logo a complete refresh. Working with designer Michelle Haswell, we introduced a new look and feel, along with a clearer visual language, that better reflected the quality, personality and growing confidence of the ScotlandShop brand we continue to build on.

Our Flagship Store at 10 Queensferry Street in Edinburgh opened its doors on 1st August 2017. Having a physical presence allowed customers to experience tartan in person & meet us face to face. It reinforced North America as a key market, as we welcomed visitors discovering ScotlandShop while travelling in Scotland.

Having made suits for our friend and Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir for many years, we designed Doddie’5 tartan in 2018. This became our first in house tartan design, launched our tartan design service and continues to raise funds for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation supporting MND research.

We held our first International Pop-Up store during New York City Tartan Week 2019 and proudly marched down 6th Avenue wearing the City tartan. This marked the start of our international events, including our first Canadian Tartan Tour and attendance our first US Highland Games in Chicago.

In response to COVID-19, we launched our Virtual Appointment service in 2020. Customers could join us via video call to talk tartan, view swatches, explore their clan connections and be guided through measurements, keeping personal service alive during challenging times.

After months of research, in July 2021 we announced plans to launch ScotlandShop USA. With North America our strongest market for several years, we invited customers to take part in competitions to guess the region, state and city. In August, we revealed Albany, New York as the home of our first overseas base.

In March 2022 we celebrated the Grand Opening of our first International store in Latham, New York. To mark the occasion, we launched the Albany tartan, inspired by colours from the County Seal and City flag, with the name rooted in the Scottish Gaelic Alba, celebrating local Scottish heritage. 

In October 2022, ScotlandShop celebrated the huge milestone of 20 years in business! And what a journey it has been... During the celebrations we ran a live Q&A with Founder of the business and Managing Director, Anna, to answer your burning questions about the business. 

With the expansion of both our business and team, we moved into a bigger and better headquarters in October 2023. The new space includes room for all operations and a dedicated showroom, allowing us to welcome more customers to our Scottish Borders base for appointments and fittings.

In March 2024 we were proud to become the owners of House of Tartan, the original tartan website and home of the world’s first tartan database. With strong clan partnerships and a trusted local reputation, this opportunity allowed us to extend the ScotlandShop brand to the market town of Crieff in Perthshire.

In 2025 we were proud to take part in the inaugural Edinburgh Tartan Parade, celebrating tartan at the heart of Scotland’s capital. From the very beginning, ScotlandShop was involved in helping bring the event to life, with Emily from our team one of six volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make it happen.
