Edinburgh Tartan Parade

After the incredible success of the inaugural Edinburgh Tartan Parade in 2025, we are thrilled to be bringing this celebration back to the streets of our capital on Saturday 9 May 2026. What began as a bold idea has quickly grown into something truly special, a joyful gathering of people from across Scotland and around the world, united by heritage, music, and the unmistakable power of tartan.

Edinburgh Tartan Parade is not just an event, it is a living expression of Scotland’s cultural identity. A vibrant march through the heart of the city, it celebrates the stories, traditions, and global connections that tartan represents. Whether you are marching in a kilt, dancing along the route, or cheering from the sidelines, this is an invitation to be part of a growing tradition that brings people together in the most colourful way possible.

The Story behind Edinburgh Tartan Parade

Inspired by the energy and pride of New York’s iconic Tartan Day Parade, and with the incredible support of their long-time President, Kyle Dawson, we’re bringing that same spirit home. But this is Edinburgh’s version, full of local voices, global connections, and a deep love for heritage, music, and community.

Whether you’re donning a kilt, cheering from the side-lines, or travelling from afar to take part, this is your invitation to be part of history in the making. Let’s walk together through the cobbled streets of the city we love.

ScotlandShop has been involved in New York City Tartan Week since 2019, and it was their President, Kyle Dawson, who first introduced me to the incredible Tania Pramschufer, the driving force behind this ambitious new celebration. Tania is a passionate and experienced events organiser, with a strong background in creating markets, concerts, and cultural festivals. As soon as Kyle put us in touch, I knew it was something I wanted to help bring to life.

It still makes me laugh that it took a mutual connection in New York to introduce two Scots living just an hour apart – but I think that says everything about the strength of the global Scottish community.

Tartan Parade Scotland

At the heart of Tartan Parade Scotland is a small but mighty team of six volunteers, each bringing their unique talents, energy, and love for Scotland to this landmark event. While the parade will be a public celebration of heritage and culture, it’s also the result of months of collaboration, community spirit, and behind-the-scenes dedication from a group who truly believe in the power of tartan to bring people together.

A former Big Issue employee and long-time advocate for fair trade and ethical business, Tania’s passion for Scottish heritage, culture, and community shines through in everything she does. She is also the creator of the World Fair Trade Tartan, and proudly leads this team with kindness, creativity, and unstoppable determination.

Originally from Hungary, Gabriella has called Scotland home for 24 years and has long championed equality, inclusion, and social awareness in both her professional and voluntary roles. With a background in the third sector and a current role in higher education, she brings valuable organisational experience and a thoughtful, inclusive perspective to the team. A regular volunteer with Hand Up Events since 2016 and first joined the team heading over to NYC Tartan Week in 2018, Gabriella is thrilled to bring that joyful spirit back to her adopted home of Edinburgh.

Gail

Born in the seaside village of Portobello, Gail is a proud Edinburgh native with a deep love for Scotland, people, and the sea. With a professional background in health and wellbeing, the third sector and HR, she’s all about creating connection and inclusion. In the summer, you’ll often find her guiding bike tours around the capital or out rowing in competitions on Scotland’s coasts. Her enthusiasm and community-minded spirit are a driving force in the team – bringing joy, energy and a touch of Porty pride to the Tartan Parade.

Margaret

Also known as MM the Celebrant, Margaret brings people and cultures together through her work as a legal wedding celebrant across Scotland. After retiring from teaching, she found her calling in uniting Scottish and Italian traditions – often dressed in the beautifully symbolic Clan Italia Tartan. A proud mum, adventurer, and cold-water swimmer, Margaret adds warmth, elegance and a cross-cultural richness to the team, reminding us that tartan is for everyone.

Olya

Olya is originally from Estonia but has proudly called Scotland home for nearly 15 years. Passionate about empowering communities and creating inclusive events, Olya has spent much of her time supporting local markets and helping people build stronger connections. A quiet powerhouse behind the scenes, she’s known for wearing many hats — though she’ll always speak up when it comes to her favourite item: her World Fair Trade Tartan kilt! Being part of the Edinburgh Tartan Parade, celebrating 900 years of the city she now calls home, has been a true highlight. Above all, Olya’s greatest pride is being mum to her kind, clever pre-teen, who inspires her every day.

Me - Emily

Edinburgh Tartan Parade 20

I suppose this is where I introduce myself properly! I’m a tartan designer and the Marketing & Brand Manager at ScotlandShop. I’m originally from Fife, but grew up in the Scottish Borders, surrounded by the rich textile heritage that inspired me to study textile design at university. I’ve always loved being part of the global Scottish community, and after my first trip to NYC Tartan Week in 2019, I’ve spent a lot of my time in North America, initially in the US, helping to open our first international store in Albany, NY, and then touring across Canada, hosting pop-up stores and attending Highland Games. In 2023 I became a Director of Scots of Canada, a national organisation supporting Scottish culture and connections across the country. So now helping to bring a tartan celebration back home to Edinburgh feels incredibly special, and I’m so proud to be part of the team making it happen.

Whether you fancy a whirl on the dance floor or an evening of world-class live music, there’s plenty more to enjoy starting with our Ceilidh in the Gardens and finishing with the spectacular Post-Parade Concert at Usher Hall.

Edinburgh Tartan Parade Ceilidh In The Gardens

After the excitement of the parade, the celebrations continue with our Ceilidh in the Gardens, a post-parade gathering for participants and their invited guests, set in the beautiful surroundings of Princes Street Gardens.

This afternoon celebration is all about connection, community, and dancing the day away. It is our way of saying thank you to everyone who marches, volunteers, and supports the parade, and of continuing the shared spirit that makes the event so special.

What to Wear at the Edinburgh Tartan Parade

Whether you’re marching in the Edinburgh Tartan Parade or cheering from the side-lines, tartan is the star of the show and wearing it with pride is what it’s all about!

Traditional and Modern Tartan Parade Outfits for Men

The classic kilt outfit remains a timeless and versatile choice for events like the Edinburgh Tartan Parade. For a formal look, pair your kilt with a Prince Charlie jacket, dress sporran, and traditional accessories for a striking Highland ensemble.

If you're going for a more relaxed look, swap the Prince Charlie for a tweed jacket or Aran jumper and for daytime wear, a day sporran and toned-down accessories complete the look while keeping things practical for marching.

Don't want to wear a kilt, why not opt for a tartan bomber jacket? A stylish modern twist that still honours the tradition. Pairing your outfit with tartan trainers or casual brogues adds comfort without compromising on pride or personality.

Parade Outfits for Women

For ladies, there are plenty of stylish ways to show off your tartan. A tartan skirt, sash, serape, or tartan dress makes for a beautiful and festive look. Add layers with a jacket or cardigan for warmth, and don’t forget comfy shoes (maybe some Tartan Trainers), it’s a parade, after all!

How to Wear Tartan Without a Kilt

Not wearing a kilt? No problem! Tartan accessories are a great way to show your Scottish pride without a full Highland outfit. A tartan scarf, cap, tie, brooch, or even a bag can add a stylish and meaningful touch to any outfit — whether you’re marching or spectating. Whether you’re wearing a family tartan or simply embracing the look for the first time, there’s no “right” way to dress. Just make sure you’re comfortable, weather-ready, and feeling proud.

From the moment the pipes begin to echo down the Royal Mile to the final notes of music at Usher Hall, the day will be packed with pride, tradition, and unforgettable memories.

Whether you’re marching, watching, dancing, or singing along, we can’t wait to welcome you to this historic first. So grab your tartan, gather your friends, and join us in making Saturday 9th May 2026 a day to remember.

Let’s make history together, in tartan.
