Finishing off back where it all began – in the MacKinnon heartlands of the west coast of Scotland. Neil MacKinnon was the first Protestant minister on the Isle of Skye. The eldest son of John Og MacKinnon, who was likely the brother of Clan Chief Sir Lachlan MacKinnon, he was first appointed the Episcopalian minister of Strath in 1627 and later took charge of the church at Sleat. It is said that as a child, MacKinnon’s life was in danger and as a result he spent some time hiding in a cave – the cave has been known ever since as Slochd Altrimen (the Nursing Cave). MacKinnon was notable for preaching in full Highland dress, and never entering the pulpit without being fully armed! He married Janet Macleod of Drynoch and had 5 sons.
