Despite what Hollywood might have you believe, the Great Kilt or Feileadh mòr does not date back to William Wallace in the 13th Century. It was probably 500 or more years ago in the 16th Century that plaid garments began to look like what we would today describe as the Great Kilt.
Literally translated from the Gaelic as 'large wrap', the Great Kilt was originally an unfinished piece of fabric that was pleated by hand, though you can select 'cheat pleats' in the options to save this part of your very own Great Kilt preparation. Hugely versatile, the fabric would have also been a blanket, rain cover and cloak.
The longer the piece of cloth, the deeper the pleats and the greater the swish and swirl, however the amount of fabric required is also influenced by your waist measurement. Guideline waist measurements are included in the length options, we would not recommend ordering less than the suggestion for your waist measurement and it is certainly possible to order more than your waist measurement requires.

The original Feileadh Mor or Great Kilt would have been a flat piece of material with no stitching other than perhaps a basic hem to protect the edges. The pleats at the back of the kilt were made by overlapping the fabric when it was put on. It does take a few moments to do and ideally requires two people, one either side of the fabric.
Cheat pleats are stitched in the centre of the fabric of your Great Kilt which avoids having to make the pleats manually. Some wearers like the convenience of not having to make the pleats, others prefer to wear the Great Kilt as it would have been centuries ago and making the pleats is part of the experience of wearing a Great Kilt Outfit.
