Baird Stories from around the world

Every month we choose a clan to celebrate, we highlight their history, castles, famous faces and an interview or two with interesting people from the clan or society. As part of our celebration we always ask clan members to share their stories with us too as we love hearing more about the lives of the modern day clan. This month we are delighted to share the story of clan Baird!

The Great Baird Return

It's always great to hear a story of someone connecting with their history. That is why Liz's story is fantastic, when she first came to Scotland she made it a priority to find her tartan and all things associated with it! Liz also brought back many Baird gifts from ScotlandShop to the States for her family and they loved it!

My name is Liz Baird & I’m a Texas resident! In July of 2019, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Scotland and absolutely loved it. We’ve always kept our heritage close to us, even a few generations removed. For my birthday, I ordered some Baird pants from your shop that so happened to be randomly on sale— ended up being my exact sizing! I genuinely felt a sense of familiarity and joy being there and have plans to return soon!

My mother was a part of Clan Baird. My children and I wore the Baird tartan to her funeral about 4 weeks ago. I’m wearing a vest, my boys are wearing kilts, and my daughter a dress, all ordered during your recent pop up shop in Dunedin, Florida.

The Baird Adventures

The Baird Clan have many fascinating members and we caught up with this adventurous Scot. Coastal Rowing Double World Champion, Ian Baird. An adventurer at heart Ian is also a Horse-riding Double in Film and TV, having made multiple appearances in Outlander as well as the films Outlaw King and Mary Queen of Scots.

In modern Scotland, the Clans aren’t what they once were but it’s still fun to meet folk with the same surname and work out how related you are (in such a small population there’s often a connection!). I suppose it’s a reminder of that shared heritage and I frequently inform people that, through John Logie Baird, our Clan invented the television! Modern Baird is my favourite tartan and is pretty difficult to beat! I love the dark blue base with the hints of heather from the green and purple lines. I’ve met friends at weddings who have picked it for a rental kilts because they don’t have any particular tartan of their own.
