Throughout the month of April we have been celebrating Clan Kerr. We've looked at the famous faces, the castles and explored the rich history and importance of Ferniehirst . Finally, we called upon the valued Clan members to share their stories; the response was fantastic and we are so excited to share them.
Special Kerr Wedding
Roy sent us photos of his daughters special wedding day. A unique touch to their wedding day was a custom made post box, finished of with a Kerr modern ribbon detailing around the top. The family are descendants from John James Manson Kerr (born 1910 in Renfrew). Roy looks amazing in his Kerr modern kilt and matching flashes. A beautiful incorporation of the family tartan in Rosie and Tim's special wedding.
If you are changing your married name to Smith, as Rosie was, then the Kerr heritage mustn't be forgotten!
Historic Kerr Roots
We were delighted that Shelby sent us a selection of photos highlighting her connection to clan Kerr. Shelby is a member of the St Andrews Society in New York and has deep connections to Scotland from her parents. Her Great-Grandfather on her Mother's side was born in Glasgow and emigrated in the 1890's. Though her mother's maiden name was Maver and isn't directly linked to a clan, they are associated with Clan Gordon and Clan Innes. Shelby is a descendant from the Kerrs of Ferniehirst through her fathers side, and had the pleasure of touring Scotland a few years ago, including the opportunity to visit Ferniehirst in Jedburgh.
A few years ago I had the opportunity to visit Jedburgh and tour the castle - it was spectacular! Such an amazing experience to connect so closely with your ancestry. I really hadn’t experienced anything like it before.'
Kerr Tartan Bedroom
Walter Kerr is the High commissioner at the Clan Kerr Society in Australia, and he has been a great customer to work with for many years. From a cosy Kerr rug to the fantastic Kerr curtains seen in this picture, we have helped Walter with his Kerr interiors. We love how the curtains tie the room together while showing Walters proud heritage. Walter is an active member of the Kerr clan and it is clear he is fond of the Kerr modern tartan and tries to incorporate it in his life where he can. The clan Kerr Society in Australia work hard to be a great source of knowledge for Australians with Scottish roots or a desire to embrace Scottish culture. The society attend many events around Australia and offer a great Ceilidh Dance too.
Renewing the vows
Get the tissues at the ready for Kevin and Heather's love story. When Kevin and Heather got married many years ago, they eloped and didn't have any of their family with them, however they promised their family a big party 'at some point'. Many years later in 2022, the couple were lucky enough to renew their vows at Newbattle Abbey in Dalkeith. Heather and Kevin spent some time researching their Scottish roots and discovered interesting ties to the Kerr clan on Heather's side and the MacFarlane clan on Kevin's side. Two very great clans, they of course incorporated the two plaids in their special ceremony and we were honoured to be able to provide Heather with her gorgeous outfit, a lovely Tartan Hostess Skirt and matching bolero jacket in the Kerr Modern tartan.
Kevin looks very smart in his MacFarlane Hunting Ancient kilt, fly plaid and kilt flashes; the two complement each other so well and their beautiful ceremony has created memories for the whole family that will last a life time. While Heather was researching her lineage, she discovered the Kerrs connection to Newbattle Abbey, and decided to have their vow renewal ceremony there. The team at Newbattle Abbey were able to make the day very special and give them the day they had planned and hoped for.
Romance still happens no matter what your age - we were both in our 60s at the time. You made my outfit possible in the Kerr tartan - which no one was expecting, apart from my two daughters who had matching bolero jackets
