Very recent data suggests the trend for home improvement and decorating projects shows little sign of abating. If you're struggling to get your hands on that 'must have' paint colour, or aren't quite brave enough to go for a full re-vamp, then adding a splash of colour with a plaid throw is a really simple way to change up your room.

We've compiled some of your most frequent questions to create the ultimate guide to styling your plaid throw blanket.

How to put a throw blanket on a couch

We all spend more time sat on our sofa that we'd like to admit and you need to be cozy when your are making your way through all of those box sets. (How many times have you watched Outlander on repeat?) It's important to have a blanket to hand, so why not make it plaid? To create that effortlessly elegant "oh that old thing I threw on the sofa" look (bottom left) we suggest folding both edges of your throw on the underside so they meet in the middle and then positioning it on your sofa before scrunching it slightly.

Tonal Tartans (Above Left)

Many clan plaids have Black Watch to thank as the basis of their pattern, the simple navy, bottle green & black colour pallet forms a great canvas to add color to, for example the Gordon Clan Modern plaid introduces a hint of yellow & in the dress variation a bold white stripe lifts the plaid and really makes it pop. Pair the classic Black Watch with accents in slightly more colorful tartan.

Clash your Clan (Above Right)

Ancient, Modern, Dress, Weathered, Red, we used them all. The Gordon Clan are host to multiple tartan variations and what better way to celebrate your Scottish heritage by showing off all of your clan plaids together. As standard the different variations of your clan plaid will share the same pattern but in different color palettes, meaning they can all sit together quite nicely. If you are lucky enough to have as much choice as the Gordon's then you'll have multiple Ancients, Moderns and Weathered's to contend with, but many will share some of the same colors although in a different pattern so again they can all work together in harmony.

How to style a throw blanket on a bed

The foot of the bed is another popular place for your plaid throw to be displayed whether you fold it, drape it or layer it up, it will always look good.

Layer Up

Your bedroom should be comfy, cozy and peaceful so to help create your plaid haven, we recommend layering up, this adds color, texture and warmth to any room. A reversible throw is a great option to add some interest without having to buy multiple blankets. All of our custom made plaid throws share this feature, you can choose to have a contrasting plaid back, pick out a color from your tartan for a plain fleece back or go for the luxurious faux fur back (above right).

Matchy Matchy

Don't be scared to go for multiple pieces in your favourite plaid, pair your Scottish soft furnishings with a neutral backdrop and you can't go wrong. White bed linen matched with a dress plaid, such as Stewart Blue Dress (above left) is a great option for spring, and just goes to show plaids don't have have to be dark and dominating.

If like me you are a bit intimidated by trying to wallpaper, then hanging a plaid blanket on your wall is a great way to instantly add a focal point within any room (and saves having to get the decorators in). ITV's Love Your Garden led by Britain's favorite gardener, Alan Titchmarsh used the beautiful Isle of Skye Plaid to create a beautiful backdrop for a Scottish summer house.
