The Doddie'5 Cup - Doddie's Fabulous New Two Tartan Suit
Cardiff was buzzing on Saturday as rugby fans descended for the inaugural Doddie Weir Cup international Autumn test match between Scotlandand Wales. Now an annual event the Doddie Weir Cup will rotate between the Principality Stadium and BT Murrayfield each year. Despite the teams already having an annual fixture during the six nations, the cup will not be competed for within the tournament and will only be up for grabs in the new November clash.
Doddie, famous not only for his rugby playing prowess, but also for the bold tartan suits created by ScotlandShop, wanted to mark the occasion with a new outfit celebrating both nations so we were set the task, at the very last minutes of course, of designing a new suit combining both the Pride of Scotland Modern & Pride of Wales tartans. Now this isn't the only suit we've made for Doddie combining more than one tartan. Previous suits have incorporated the MacFarlane Clan Modern & MacFarlane Hunting Modern tartans (Doddie's family tartans), and the Pride of Scotland Modern, Pride of Wales, Pride of Ireland & Lewis Red tartans for the four nations included within the British & Irish Lionsteam, which Doddie wore on the tour to New Zealand.
We didn't want Doddie'5 latest suitto match any of the suits in his wardrobe so we had to find a new way to combine the two tartans. Instead of alternating the tartans like we did with Doddie'5 MacFarlane suit, this time we started with the centre jacketpanels in Pride of Scotland and added highlights of the Welsh tartan throughout the jacket detailing. When it comes to a waistcoatthere aren't quite as many options, so a simple half and half design was again finished off with some Pride of Wales tartan detailing. We do love adding finishing touches such as the buttons covered in the contrasting tartan! In Doddie's MacFarlane Suit we split the tartan in the trousers, left and right, but in this latest creation we mixed it up! From the front you may be forgiven for thinking this was a simple Pride of Scotland Modern pair of trousers, but oh no, the back of the trousers features the Pride of Wales Tartan.
Just before the National anthems, Doddie, his wife Kathy and their three sons walked out of the tunnel at Principality Stadium to a standing ovation to present the beautiful new Doddie Weir Cup. Read more about how the trophy was made on our previous blog as it is another great story of Scottish manufacturing. We created Kathy a double sided stole to represent both nations and the boys wore trousers in the Pride Modern and Pride of Wales, with Ben electing to be Welsh for the day. While speaking to presenter, Sonja McLaughlan Doddie said:
I've got a new suit for today, which is quite amazing, so we've got our Pride of Scotland Tartan, Pride of Wales Tartan, we're here for an absolutely fabulous day.
Doddie was spot on, it was a fabulous day, the atmosphere in Cardiff was electric, hours prior to kick off the city bars were full and if you wanted to get a train in to the city you had to be prepared to get very close to the crowds of Welsh supporters who were busy singing the Tom Jones classic, Delilah! Despite feeling slightly outnumbered the Welsh were fabulous hosts and made us Scots feel very welcome in the city.
Unfortunately in the end the Scots weren't able to hold off a strong Welsh attack and the final score ended up being 21-10 to the Welsh. The Scots went out there to make Doddie proud and despite the loss they really did give it their all for Doddie.
"I would love this trophy to be taken back to Scotland and to drink out of it, but I would also be delighted if the Welsh won it so I could drink out of it there."
It may not have been a victory for Scotland, but it was certainly a victory for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation and the rugby community, after being put under pressure from supporters the SRUand WRUearlier this week committed to ensuring a joint six figure donation is made to the foundation.
