Ancient Tartan
Prima del 1860 i tessuti venivano colorati utilizzando tinture animali e vegetali. Ciò produceva i colori più tenui tipici dei tartan antichi, verdi muschio e azzurri cielo, un rosso più aranciato e, secondo alcuni, metteva in risalto il motivo con un effetto molto maggiore, poiché i contrasti erano molto più vivaci rispetto ai tartan moderni. Il motivo o sett rimane lo stesso in tutte le varianti di un singolo tartan, e variano solo le sfumature o i toni.

Dopo il 1860, i coloranti chimici sostituirono quelli naturali di origine animale e vegetale e nacquero i tartan moderni, caratterizzati da colori più intensi e vivaci. I tenui verdi e blu divennero verde bottiglia e blu navy, mentre i rossi diventarono scarlatti.

Weathered Tartan
Prima del 1860 i tessuti venivano colorati utilizzando tinture animali e vegetali. Ciò produceva i colori più tenui e terrosi tipici dei tartan Weathered, che ricordano i colori più vivaci sottoposti all'azione del vento, della pioggia e del sole, producendo bellissime tonalità sbiadite, verdi oliva e marroni, e azzurri molto chiari con rossi che tendono più al rosa che al rosso.

Hunting Tartan
I tartan da caccia sono tartan mimetici e alcuni clan non hanno queste varianti perché sono già prevalentemente verdi o marroni e non hanno bisogno di modifiche per mimetizzarsi con i colori della natura. I tartan Black Watch o Gunn ne sono un esempio, mentre un tartan come il Fraser è prevalentemente rosso e non fornirebbe molta copertura agli uomini durante la caccia.

Dress Tartan

During the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Carmichaels travelled widely - some to Galloway - where they became kinsmen of the Stewarts of Galloway and later moved northwards settling in Lismore and Appin as kinsmen of the Stewarts of Appin and the McDougals.

There is only one source of the name ‘Carmichael’ and that is territorial or geographic in origin from the northern edge of the Southern Uplands in Scotland.
Carmichael Castle
Carmichael was the seat of the barony of Carmichael from the 13th century until the 17th century, before being replaced by the mansion of Carmichael House in the 18th century. Robert the Bruce granted Sir James Douglas “the valley of Duglas, and the whole land and tenement of Kirkmychel” in 1321. These lands were inherited in 1342 by Douglas’ nephew, William Douglas (later created the 1st Lord Douglas), who granted the Carmichael lands to one of his vassals around the middle of the fourteenth century. This vassal subsequently became known as William de Carmichael.During the Battle of Beauge, Sir John de Carmichael managed to unhorse the Duke of Clarence, brother to Kind Henry V of England. On the Duke's death, the English troops fled and the outcome of the war was completed altered. In the process of unhorsing the Duke, Sir John broke his own spear. For this Sir John was awarded the family crest featuring a broken speak grasped by a gauntlet.
