Why Genealogy?

Scottish Americans sure are passionate about their connections to Scotland -- and we love them for it! Genealogical societies all over the US are beacons of hope for those looking to trace their roots and better document their lineage, and Americans with Scots heritage are no different. Some folks come from families with generations of genealogical documentation proving their Scottish heritage, while others, like me, are first generation amateur genealogists with primary interests in understanding our familial connections to Scotland. Luckily, here at ScotlandShop we can help you locate and explore your heritage via our clan consultation. But if you’re brand new to your family’s history or seeking help with more in depth personal research, a genealogical society is your very best options to locate helpful documents and experts in the field.

The Capital District Genealogical Society

In 1981, The Capital District Genealogical Society was organized and today serves nine counties in New York, in addition to Albany. At the time of the society's inception, their mission was laid down with the four points below.

1. To teach members and other interested persons how to trace their family roots, lineage, or heritage.

2. To provide help to those seeking information via queries on relatives and/or family who in the past had connections to the Capital District and adjacent counties.

3. To educate the general public and membership by conducting special programs relevant to the purpose of the Society.

4. To coordinate the interests and concerns of persons and/or organizations throughout the Capital District area, New York State and the country in the development of information and resources to better serve the purpose of the Society, the membership and the public at large.

The CDGS is connected to the NYS Cultural Education Center, which is home to the New York State Museum, New York State Archives, and the New York State Library. Volunteers of the society are located in the Library during the week to help those seeking genealogical expertise.
