Meet the Famous Sutherlands

Donald Sutherland

One notable Sutherland made his name as a towering figure in cinema, admired for his arresting screen presence, intelligence, versatility, and six-decade long career.

Donald Sutherland was born on the 17th of July 1935 in New Brunswick, Canada. He was interested in performing arts from a young age and studied a degree in engineering and drama at Victoria University. He quickly decided that becoming an engineer was not for him, and instead travelled overseas to London to hone his acting skills at the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

While at LAMDA, his talent began to catch the industry’s attention, and he gained roles in several West End productions.

He achieved his screen breakthrough with ‘The Dirty Dozen,’ which ranked as the 5th highest-grossing film of 1967 and paved the way for Sutherland to leave London for the bright lights of Hollywood.

His portrayal of Hawkeye Pierce in the comedy ‘MASH’ in 1970 catapulted him to international fame, opening the door to more enviable roles, including in ‘Start the Revolution Without Me,’ alongside Gene Wilder, and ‘Klute’ with Jane Fonda.

Sutherland was one of the most famous leading men of the 1970s, even receiving a BAFTA nomination for the psychological horror ‘Don’t Look Now’ in 1973. His career continued to thrive throughout the 1980s, when he was praised for his performance in the Robert Redford-directed ‘Ordinary People,’ and the 1990s, when he starred in several films including ‘JFK,’ ‘Six Degrees of Separation,’ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer.’

In 2005, Sutherland played the iconic role of Mr Bennet in ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ alongside Kiera Knightley, receiving more critical acclaim. In 2012, he was discovered by a whole new generation of fans when he appeared as President Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games film franchise.

In 2017, he received an Honorary Oscar to celebrate his sparkling career, with the Academy movingly announcing that the award was ‘for a lifetime of indelible characters, rendered with unwavering truthfulness.’

Donald Sutherland passed away on the 20th of June 2024, in Miami, Florida, at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of cinematic excellence, and is inarguably one of Canada’s most celebrated and beloved actors.

Nadine Sutherland

Our next famous face for today is a musical prodigy who was supported by none other than the legendary Bob Marley!

Nadine Sutherland was born on the 15th of March 1968 in Kingston, Jamaica, and began performing at just 11 years old. She had an impressive work ethic and balanced her musical endeavours with her studies, as she attended college to complete a course in business administration.

Her musical career began to take off when she caught the attention of Bob Marley, who was so impressed by her talent that he chose her as the first artist he signed to his new label, Tuff Gong. She recorded several Christian reggae singles, including ‘Hands and Heart,’ and ‘Work and Pray,’ which helped her to hone her already impressive skills.

After Marley’s death, Sutherland performed outside of Jamaica for the first time, honouring her mentor at a memorial concert alongside Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, the I Threes, and the Wailers.

She worked solidly throughout the 1980s, supporting Bunny Wailer on a US-wide tour, and performing as a backing singer at Gussie Clarke’s Music Works studio. In 1993, she recorded one of her biggest hits, ‘Action,’ which was used by the Jamaican Labour Party as their election campaign theme.

In 2007, she released the album ‘Call My Name,’ which was a hit in Jamaica, Florida, and New York, and was even nominated in the top Reggae album category at the 2008 Canadian Reggae Music Awards.

Sutherland has continued to display the work ethic she developed in her early years, never resting on her laurels, and always pursuing new avenues of achievement. Most notably, in 2015, she returned to education to complete a master’s degree in cultural studies at the University of the West Indies.

Later on, in September of 2020, she stepped into politics once again, recording a new version of her 1993 hit ‘Action’ for US vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Why not check out some of Sutherland’s work today? We think it would be a very fun way to connect with your clan kin!

Rory Sutherland

Our final famous Sutherland has made a splash on the rugby field, impressing both the industry and fans with his sporting talent.

Rory Sutherland was born on the 24th of August 1992 in Hawick in the Scottish Borders. Even as a child, his athletic skills were clear, and he rose up the ranks of his hometown club, before representing the Borders and Scotland at under-17 and under-18 levels.

During his first season of senior rugby at Hawick, he showed his versatility as a player by switching to loose-head prop, catching the attention of RBS Premiership runners-up and Borders League winners, Gala.

In 2021, Sutherland joined the Worcester Warriors, but unfortunately in October 2022, the company responsible for employing the players was liquidated, meaning that all players had their contracts terminated. Luckily, Sutherland’s talent would not allow him to remain unsigned for long, and he quickly joined Ulster on a short-term contract.

In 2023, he joined Oyonnax for a 1-year contract so that he could play in the French top 14, before being signed to reigning United Rugby Championship team, Glasgow Warriors, in 2024.

Alongside this, his international career was also thriving. He was first called up to the senior Scotland squad by coach Vern Cotter on the 19th of January 2016 for the 2016 Six Nations Championship, receiving his first Scotland cap in a game against Ireland. By 2021, he had made 18 appearances for Scotland, and in 2023, he was selected to be part of Scotland’s squad for the Rugby World Cup in France.

He was also selected to be part of the British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa in 2021, and just last year was called up ahead of the test series in the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour to Australia. It’s clear that his star is still rising, we can’t wait to see what he achieves next!

We are feeling very impressed with Clan Sutherland’s great and varied talents, and we hope you are too! If you are lucky enough to have Sutherland heritage, you should feel both proud of and inspired by your multi-talented kin!
