Tartan Style - Fashionably Fraser

As we step into the new year, we embrace a new clan and it’s tartan variations! I always think a new year is a great opportunity to update your wardrobe with a few key pieces for your ‘New Year, New Me’ looks. Starting 2021 off is

Pink

If you want to recreate the designer look, styling a two-piece trouser suit in Fraser Red Weathered will give you the perfect bold business look. If you feel overwhelmed by that much pink however, I suggest wearing your fitted 2 button jacket and cropped slim fit trousers as separates with block colours. As seen on the catwalk, add in solid colour shirts or sweaters to compliment the tartan and simplify the look. These are suitable for the office when combined with shades of navy and can be ideal for creating a unique date outfit when paired with a mint green.

The longline jacket in Fraser Red Weathered would couple beautifully with a solid colour fitted dress. Wear with trainers for running to the supermarket, or heels for dinner out.

For another take on the pink, Glamour suggests trying one of the season’s more remarkable colour combinations;

“One of the most unusual colour pairings we spotted repeatedly on the AW runways was brown and peach, but it was also one of our favs. Softer, obviously, than brown and black, this is the perfect, modern way to lift and soften brown hues without having to resort to the more obvious - albeit timelessly chic - 'tonal' look via beiges and creams.”

Pinkandbrown

The gentle brown and pink looks seen over fashion week are wonderful for creating a softer, more relaxed look, while keeping colour in your outfit. The best way to style these colours are through the classic skirt suit according to WhoWhatWear;

“The likes of Miu Miu, Michael Kors and Rejina Pyo all showed a skirt suit. You can either have a matching jacket and midi or mix a skirt with a blazer in a different print, using a belt to tie the look together.”

From WhoWhatWear’s advice, I would opt for a fine pleated skirt in Fraser Red Weathered with a Fraser Hunting Weathered fitted jacket styled over. Add a brown belt over the jacket to cinch the waist in and emphasise your silhouette. This look has beautiful structured tailoring, but contrasted with the light flowing skirt keeps it fun and balanced.

Fraser tartans within menswear should take a more subtle approach, combining the natural earthy shades of the hunting variations rather than the bold reds and pinks found in womenswear. Designer Antonio Marras combines browns and khaki greens within his menswear collections for layered, neutral looks.

Marras uses long sweaters, casual kilts, relaxed jackets and slim cut trousers to created layered looks perfect for looking good while remaining comfortable. Subtle prints and patterns feature throughout his work which can be recreated with tartans and tweeds. I suggest opting for the Fraser Hunting Modern tartan in the form of slim cut trousers, will a deep green sweater and classic fit tweed jacket. This will create the boxy look across the shoulders as seen on the catwalk, balanced out with slimmer fitted garments. If you are truly embracing your Scottish heritage however, try the same relaxed look, but with a casual kilt rather than trousers. Wear this with dark green kilt socks and boots.

Menswear

If you prefer something more traditional, take inspiration from hit TV show Outlander and the starring Frasers! Claire and Jamie Fraser have inspired many of us to embrace our love of tartan and take 18thcentury elements into our daily wardrobes. I recommend wearing a Fraser Hunting Serape to replicate the muted tartans on the show, and add a belt at the waist for shape if you wish. A kilted skirt, or casual kilt for the gentlemen will finish off your look. Play around with different Hunting tartans for texture and depth to the outfit. I would choose to modernize the outfit slightly with heels (we’re not in the 1700’s anymore after all!).
