Unleash Your Inner Tartan: Clan Baird

If you are a Baird yourself, a member of Clan Baird through family links or simply just interested in this particular Clan then this is the blog for you. Today we will look at the history behind Clan Baird and how this mighty clan came to be.

The first mention of the name Baird. Perhaps you can shed some light?

Fast forward a few decades to 1310 and the name Baird originates from Biggar, in the county of Lanarkshire. In spite of this, there is much stipulation around this topic as there are some historians who believe it is of Norman descent, while there are others who are certain it derived from the South of France.

The year 1539 was one of importance for Clan Baird in terms of land, as The Earl of Buchan transferred the lands of Auchmedden in Aberdeenshire into the hands of Andrew Baird, for a small sum of money of course. It was these lands that became the seat of Clan Baird for over 200 years and a castle was built on the grounds known as Auchmedden Castle. Unfortunately the castle was demolished centuries ago and the last of the remains were destroyed in the early 20th Century.

By 1745 William Baird was the Laird of Auchmedden and he decided to join the Jacobite Rising as an officer at Culloden. However, by the end of the unsuccessful battle (on his side) he was forced to sell Auchmedden Castle and the surrounding estate to the Earls of Aberdeen in order to pay off his debts.

Shortly after this, Thomas the Rhymer spoke of a prophecy that stated "There would be an eagle in the crags while there was a Baird was living in the grounds. It was at this time that the eagles returned to the estate, and so the prophecy was fulfilled once again.
