You know what they say, if you want to get ahead, get a hat, and we think you could get even further if you a don a little tartan number! If you don't already have a tartan hat waiting in your wardrobe, then now is the time to change this fashion faux pas. A tartan hat, or cap, is a timeless accessory that can go with almost any outfit and today you are in for a treat as I will be taking you through my top styling tips.

Each of our caps can be custom made to your specified size (if you aren't sure on your hat size, learn how to measure your head in this handy guide) in your choice of over 500 tartans. The beauty of our caps is that they are made from a beautiful quality, pure wool tartan fabric which is naturally breathable, keeping your head nice and toasty warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The peak is perfectly angled to protect your eyes and face from the sun's bright rays, but also from unexpected Scottish showers. These are just a few of the reasons why your cap will be your best friend all year long!

“The function of a hat is threefold: to shock, mystify, and delight any and all observers.” - Gabriella Paiella, GQ

Tartan Flat Cap

A gatsby, bonnet, sixpence, duckbill, paddy, driving cap or flat cap, whatever you call this cap, it is a true classic within the men's fashion scene and personally one of my favourites within ScotlandShop's collection. This original accessory dates all the way back to 15th century Britain when a law was introduced that all noblemen and boys over the age of 6 were obliged to wear a hat on Sundays and holidays. If you want to discover more check out Zainab's "The hat that travelled through history" blog.

“It has enjoyed a resurgence for its vintage appeal, ease of wear, and its simplicity as an addition to a weekend ensemble. It’s best suited to a nippy weekend drive to the hills or lazy brunches.” - DMarge

The timeless nature of the Flat Cap calls for a pure and minimalist outfit, with the exception of the tartan of course. Picture a crisp, white shirt, a pair of smart, blue jeans and a bright tartan flat cap and you’re heading in the right direction. Add one of our lambswool sweaters for those more chilly days.

Tartan Eight Quarter Cap

The Eight Quarter Cap, also known as a Newsboy Cap, first came to the height of popularity during the early 20th century, due to their use, as the nickname suggests, by newspaper boys. They were originally inspired by the Scottish Tam O'Shanter and are made up of 8 pieces, attached at the top with a button. Swap the button for a pompom if you want a more european look. The eight quarter cap has become increasingly popular as of late due to its use in the period crime drama, 'Peaky Blinders' (we devoted a whole blog to the fashion in the show, if you want to find out more), and we understand why because it really is an accessory full of cheeky character.

On top wear a plain t-shirt or sweater (if the weather warrants it) and one of our newly released bomber jackets in a coordinating tartan to your cap, or a contrasting tartan if you want to make a statement. On the bottom opt for a pair of jeans to really highlight the casual look of your outfit and finish off with a pair of trainers.

Button Down Tartan Flat Cap

Our Button Down Flat Cap is very similar to the classic flat cap except for the obvious alternative detail, you guessed it, it features a button fastening so you can go old school with the brim pulled low and a double layer peak. This style of cap is the modern counterpart to the classic fat cap, which means it warrants some slightly more on trend styling advice.

“Think of your cap as an accessory and not as an afterthought. Think of it as something that you consciously choose to wear instead of something you grab on the way out the door.” - TrendHim

Wool Tartan Tam

The Tartan Tam is definitely the hat that most people associate with us great Scots. Originally taking it’s name from the Rabbie Burns poem ‘Tam O’Shanter’ - also referred to as a Tammie - this style of hat has been worn by the Scots since the 16th century. By the first world war they had been adopted as part of the military uniform, however these days their use is much less formal. Most popular modern-day uses include a day out to watch the rugby, enjoying the a day out at the Highland Games, sightseeing around Scotland or pairing with your kilt outfit for more casual occasions. We can make our Tartan Tams from either brushed lambswool or a lightweight 10oz wool, depending which of our 500 tartans you select.

I hope you enjoyed my round up of tartan hats as much as I enjoyed writing it! If you have any questions regarding sizing, tartans or even styling before placing your order why not book one of our in-store (Edinburgh or Albany) appointments or a virtual appointment via video call and one of our tartan experts can answer any weird and wonderful queries you may have.
