Tartan Tie Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a tartan tie?

There is no better accessory than a tartan tie. Liven up a button down shirt, accessorise a plain coloured suit, and celebrate your Scottish heritage all at the same time. A tie is a long piece of cloth worn around the neck, under a collar and tied to the front with a knot. There are many different tartan tie knots for you to explore and perfect. Tartan ties are made in pure wool fabric cut on the bias to show the maximum amount of the pattern possible.

What do you wear with a tartan tie?

Wondering how to style your tartan tie? There are so many options of what to wear with a tartan tie. Co-ordinate or contrast your tartan tie with a plain coloured shirt, or mix and match your tartans or patterns for a bolder look. If you aren't teaming your tartan tie with a kilt, for the bottom half go casual with jeans, chinos or shorts teamed with your favourite tartan tie loosely knotted. Add a blazer for the evening. For a more formal look so many tartans include subtle base colours such as black, blue and grey, perfect to accent a suit and show off your Scottish heritage.

How long should my tie be?

The tip of your tie should just about touch your belt buckle. Getting the right length is important, as ties that are too short or too long don’t look good. If your tie’s not the right length, just untie it and start again. Practice makes perfect!

How do I look after my tie?

Our wool tartan ties should be hand washed, in lukewarm water and using a gentle laundry detergent specifically designed for wool products.

Taking care to remove your tie will also extend it's lifecycle. Gently undo the knot, if you pull too hard, you’ll shorten the life of your tie. Once the tie is untied, hang it up, or roll it loosely in a small drawer compartment.

We are passionate about our Scottish tartans and how you style them so why wouldn't we help you learn to tie the finest knots with your tartan? We have written a whole series of blogs to give you useful hints and tips to show your tartan tie off to it's full potential! Our favourite is the The Four In Hand Knot, the all-time classic of the tie knots.

Did you know that the four in hand knot takes its name from the four horse carriage? The knot is tied in such a way that it resembles a knot used by the carriage driver to keep the reins of all four horses in hand. This fashion statement of the 1800's is a narrow and elongated knot, easy to tie if you follow our step by step guide.
