What is the difference between a Stole, Shawl, Wrap and Sash?

We know that when the terms stole, shawl, wrap and sash are used interchangeably it can be really easy to get confused with what product you are actually buying. In reality, all of these products are essentially the same thing, it really just depends where about in the world you are as the terminology changes slightly. Despite this, we have outlined the definition of each term and which ScotlandShop products fall into each category to avoid any further confusion.

Shawl or Wrap

A Shawl is the most common term that is used and it traditionally refers to a piece of fabric in the shape of a rectangle, triangle or square. The fabric is usually quite large (50-70 cm wide to 175cm -190cm long) and it is draped around the shoulders or wrapped around the whole body. We offer a few different products that fit this criteria, but please don't be put off by the fact they don't feature 'shawl' or 'wrap' in the title.

Our collection of shawls or wraps include:

Stole

A Stole is considered a dressier version of the shawl. It will be slightly narrower and made from a more expensive fabric, such as faux fur or silk. The Stole is supposed to be draped around the shoulders when attending a ball, party or even a ceilidh! We have plenty of options to choose from, but if you need any help choosing the perfect stole for you please do not hesitate to get in touch.
