A belt and buckle would not normally be the first consideration when creating a kilt outfit, however it is often forgotten about or the cause of confusion about when and how it should be worn. In some instances the belt and buckle are vital pieces of highland wear and should not be forgotten about. However, there are a few rules that you should bear in mind before you step out in your shiny new Kilt Belt and Buckle. The first and most important rule is that the Kilt Belt should only be worn with an Argyll Jacket. It should be worn in the absence of a waistcoat in order to fill the gap between the shirt and the kilt, and should never be worn with a waistcoat. This also means that a Kilt Belt would never be worn with a Prince Charlie Jacket and Waistcoat.
A Kilt Belt should ideally not be needed for the reasons a belt would ordinarily be worn (e.g. to hold up a pair of jeans). If a kilt has been measured correctly it should fit perfectly around the waist, although we do understand that it might come in handy if you are going to be doing some wild Ceilidh dancing! Regardless, a kilt belt is not worn for practical reasons, it is worn because it is a traditional part of the kilt outfit and this is why they are so popular. Hundreds of years ago when the Scots wore the great kilt or feileadh mor, the single piece of tartan fabric was gathered together, belted at the waist, with untailored pleats to the back and the rest of the cloth thrown over the shoulder and pinned, or worn as a cloak or cape.
The final thing to remember is that the belt should not go through the belt loops at the back, as strange as that sounds, the belt loops at the back are actually to be used for the sporran. The belt buckle should also be centred with the sporran at the front of the kilt.
