How to measure for your Kilt Outfit

Buying a kilt is a rite of passage for many Scots and those of Scottish descent across the world. It is not only an investment in your heritage, but an investment in a high-quality garment. A good kilt can become a family heirloom, lasting for at least a generation or two if cared for properly. Our Kilt Outfit package includes everything you need to wear this authentic highland wear with pride including an Argyll or Prince Charlie Jacket, 4 Yard 10oz Pure Wool Kilt, Semi-Dress Sporran & Chain Strap, Classic Ghillie Brogues, Tartan or Plain Tie, Sgian Dubh and Kilt Socks.

To ensure that you get the perfect fit, be sure to follow our measuring tips and advice:

For the most accurate measurements, use a tailors tape measure and have a friend or family member measure for you. Ensure you have nothing in any of your pockets and that you stand tall and relaxed while getting measurements taken.

FOR THE KILT

WAIST (B)

Run tape measure firmly around your waist at the navel which is where the kilt is traditionally worn. Ensure the tape measure is pulled nice and tight around the waist as the kilt sits higher on your body and so it needs to fit snugly enough to ensure that it will stay up.

PLEASE NOTE: Waist size of 42 inches or over will carry a small surcharge.

SEAT (C)

Measure around the widest part of your bottom. Ensure the tape measure is straight across the front and back of the body, and that it is not pulled too tight.

LENGTH (E)

For the perfect traditional kilt length, kneel on the ground and measure from the navel down the the floor. Traditionally the kilt should finish at the middle of the kneecap, unless you prefer to wear it shorter or longer then of course we can make to your personal preference.

FOR THE PRINCE CHARLIE OR ARGYLE KILT JACKET

SLEEVE ARM LENGTH (H)

Measure from the top of the shoulder straight down the outside of the arm to the desired sleeve length. Take this measurement with your arm straight down by your side. This is ideally measured with a Jacket on for accuracy.

CHEST (A)

Measure around the widest part of the chest. Ensure the tape measure is straight across the front and back of the body.

The Fabric

We use a top quality lighter weight 10oz kilt fabric woven in Scotland to make your casual kilt. This fabric will last forever if cared for correctly and has enough weight to hold the pleats and create a good swing.

Making your Kilt

Buying a kilt is creating a family heirloom that can be handed down from generation to generation. Our kilts are all traditionally made in Scotland with all the trappings of a high quality finish including 2 leather straps and buckles on the waist and one on the hip, fringed front apron and nice deep pleats for a great swing. The kilts are made using a combination of machine and hand sewing to ensure a top quality finish.

To Sett or To Stripe

As standard we make our kilts to Sett but if you want yours made to Stripe or horizontally please just ask. Sometimes this costs a little bit more as it uses more fabric and takes more time but rest assured we will only apply a surcharge if we have to.

The Tartan

Your kilt is made to measure just for you and you can choose from over 500 Scottish clan tartans. If you can't find the one you are looking for please ask as we may be able to source it for you.

How to care for your kilt

Properly cared for your kilt will last for generations. This is a pure wool fabric and should be dry cleaned only. Wool fabric can become dull with general dust and dirt. Gentle brushing with a garment brush will brighten it up again.
