What accessories are meant to be worn with a kilt?

    The main accessories worn with a kilt outfit are:

    • Tie or Bow tie
    • Sporran
    • Kilt Pin
    • Kilt Socks
    • Flashes
    • Ghillie Brogues / Kilt Shoes

    Additional to this, a kilt belt and buckle is normally worn when with a kilt when you are not wearing a waistcoat (more casual occasions) and a fly plaid is often worn by a groom or at clan gathering by significant clan members e.g. Clan Chief. A brooch is also required when wearing a fly plaid, to act as an weight to anchor this down when being worn. 

How do I wear my Sporran?

    The simplest rule is that your Sporran should sit a hands width or 4 inches below your Kilt Belt or waistband, however there are a few other styling tips you should be aware of. Find our more on our Guide to Wearing a Sporran.

How should a kilt pin be worn?

    Traditionally a kilt pin is worn on the right hand side, pinned through the front apron 4 inches from the bottom of the kilt and 2 inches in from the fringing on the side. Make sure the pin is only through the front apron and not the layers underneath as this could result in damaging your kilt. Find out more on our how to wear guide.

Does a kilt pin go up or down?

    Your kilt pin should point down.

Do you wear a belt with a kilt?

    Belts are not a necessity with kilts as they have buckles on the hip that can be adjusted to stay in place. The belt and buckle is worn more as a decorative accessory and with more casual or informal kilt outfits for example if you are wearing a ghillie / Jacobite shirt or if you are not wearing a waistcoat. 

    A belt shouldn't be worn with more formal kilt outfits, especially when wearing a waistcoat or Prince Charlie jacket. 

Is it okay to wear a kilt without a sporran?

    Yes, a kilt can be worn without a sporran. There is no specific rule regarding wearing a sporran and certainly for more casual occasions e.g. a sporting event this is seen as more 'acceptable' vs formal occasions like a wedding.  

    For more formal occasions, we would certainly encourage wearing a sporran to 'complete' the look and helping to keep the front apron down as well as providing a place for your belongings.
